TOLEDO, Ohio ââ'¬"- The Purdue men's golf team recorded the best 18-hole score of the day in the second round to surge to third place after 36 holes at the Inverness Intercollegiate, held at the prestigious Inverness Club in Toledo.

The Boilermakers recorded a 36-hole total of 20-over par 588 (302-286) to sit in third place behind California (+16; 584) and East Tennessee State (+18; 586) entering tomorrow's final round.

Purdue's second-round score of 2-over par 286 was just five shots off the best 18-hole score in the tournament's 12th year of existence, set by Florida State in 2007 (281). It was the best round of the day by five strokes as California shot a 291 in the first round.

The second-round effort overcame a tough first round, where Purdue recorded an 18-over par 302 to sit in seventh place. Purdue got off to a rough start in the morning, finding itself at 11-over par as a group after just 18 holes of action. The Boilermakers recorded eight double bogeys while connecting on just 10 birdies in the first round, before coming alive in the second round.

Junior Fernando Barco continues to play very well, leading the Boilermakers with a 2-over par 144 (73-71), good for a third-place tie after 36 holes. Barco leads the field in par-3 scoring (-2) and par-5 scoring (-3) while ranking second in the field with seven birdies. Barco recorded a consistent round on the day with seven birdies, five bogeys, two double bogeys and 22 pars. Both of his double bogeys came on Inverness' signature hole, the par-4 7th.

Barco is just four shots behind California's KK Limbhasut at 2-under par 140.

Classmate Austin Eoff is in a tie for sixth at 3-over par 145 (75-70). Eoff was 1-over par after nine holes in the first round before a bogey-double bogey-par-bogey stretch dropped him to 5-over par after 13 holes, before ending with a 4-over par 75 in the morning session. Then, after starting 3-over par through the first five holes in the second round, Eoff caught fire, registering four birdies in his final 13 holes to finish his round with a 1-under par 70.

Sophomore Brian Carlson is in a 21st-place tie at 7-over par 149 (77-72). In his opening round, he was 1-over par through 13 holes, before a bogey-double bogey-double bogey stretch dropped him to 6-over par for his round. In the second round, he was 2-under par through 11 holes, before bogeying three of the final seven holes to finish with a 1-over par 72.

Senior Stuart Macdonald is tied for 24th at 8-over par 150 (77-73). Macdonald was 6-over par through nine holes before playing his final nine holes in even-par for an opening-round 77. After opening his second round with a double bogey, he played the final 17 holes in even-par for a 2-over par 73.

Freshman Jarle Volden rounded out Purdue's scoring at 13-over par 155 (77-78), good for a 52nd-place tie.

Purdue will be paired with California and East Tennessee State, teeing off hole No. 1 from 8:50 to 9:30 a.m. ET.
