Across the board, numbers were up. In many cases, they were up significantly.
To wit:
Football was up 30 percent to more than 1,000 campers.
Both men's and women's basketball were up 25 percent to 575 and 455 campers, respectively.
Volleyball, which always is well-attended, continued to grow and has had more than 1,000 campers with its Team Camp still to come July 17 to 19.
Swimming & diving was up 10 percent and had 90 returning campers.
"Two things stand out … there is widespread interest in Purdue Athletics and the word is out that our coaches and their staffs do a tremendous job running their camps," said Tom Schott, senior associate athletics director for communications. "There has been a flurry of activity all summer, which is great to see."
Purdue head coaches and their assistants are sharing their knowledge while offering youngsters the opportunity to spend time in big-time facilities on a Big Ten Conference campus.
"We're Boilers through and through," said Bonnie Kramer, from Linton, Indiana, before checking in her granddaughter for volleyball general skills camp last week. "Both of her parents are Purdue grads. We're all Boilers from their grandpa down to the kids. We come to Purdue for football and basketball games, our kids came for school and now our grandkids are coming for camps."
