LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Purdue men's golf team struggled during the middle part of the round, but stayed consistent on the final six holes and gave itself a chance to advance in Saturday's final round, sitting in ninth place at even-par 568 (279-289).

Stuart Macdonald fired a second-round 69 to lead the Boilermakers.

Despite being in ninth place, Purdue is just four shots out of fifth place, the cut line for advancement into the NCAA National Championships. Southeastern Louisiana and Louisville are tied for fifth at 4-under par 564, Auburn is seventh at 3-under par 565 and California is eighth at 2-under par 566.

The host school, Texas Tech, leads after 36 holes at 16-under par 552, while Texas (-13), Duke (-10) and Houston (-7) round out the top four.

Purdue played holes eight through eleven in 11-over par, but played the final seven holes a combined 3-under par to give the Boilermakers some momentum heading into Saturday.

"It was a tougher day with the wind blowing, but did a good job hanging in there later in the round," head coach Rob Bradley said. "It was a tough day to score. We gave ourselves a chance tomorrow and that is all we wanted. We just wanted that chance and we got it." Purdue can also look back to last year's NCAA Regional at Rich Harvest Farms for experience and motivation. Purdue entered the final round in sixth, three shots out of fifth place behind USC and six shots out of third place (Clemson). The Boilermakers quickly made up ground on the front nine, then held on during the back nine to advance to the National Championships.

Three players (Eoff, Perez and Macdonald) played in that final round a year ago and Bradley hopes that experience can help them in tomorrow's final round.

"We can draw off last year some, but there are some really good teams here, and really good teams outside the cut line. No one is going to lay down and we are going to have to go out and take it," Bradley said. "But I think we are in a good spot. Everyone's playing well and we will be ready to go. It's going to be another tough day and the wind is really supposed to blow tomorrow. We just need to play smart and play our game and we will be fine.

"We have to play the easier holes better. The first hole is an almost driveable par-4 and we played it 3-over par. You look around and teams played it 3- or 4-under par and that is a huge difference," Bradley added. "The 17th hole is a driver-iron, par-5 and we only had two birdies. We need to take better advantage of the holes that you can score well on."

Austin Eoff continues to lead the Boilermakers, currently in a sixth-place tie at 4-under par 138 (65-73). Eoff had three straight bogeys on holes two through four, but recorded 13 pars and one birdie on his last 14 holes, including pars on every hole of the back nine to remain in the individual hunt. He is four shots behind California's K.K. Limbhasut (-8) for individual medalist honors.

Senior Enzo Perez is tied for 26th after a 2-over par 73 to give the Biarritz, France, native a 36-hole total of even-par 142 (69-73). Perez was 1-under par through seven holes before playing the next three holes in 4-over par to fall back. He then birdied No. 12 and parred the remaining six holes for a second-round 73.

Junior Stuart Macdonald turned in Purdue's best round of the day with a 2-under par 69 to move him to 42nd overall at 2-over par 144 (75-69). Macdonald got his round going with an eagle on the par-4, 355-yard seventh hole. He would then record three birdies against two bogeys over his final 10 holes for his round of 69.

Macdonald holed out from about 99 yards in the fairway for his eagle on the seventh hole.

Brian Carlson is 58th at 5-over par 147 after rounds of 73-74. Carlson was 1-over par at the turn, but posted a seven on the par-3 10th. He would recover with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 for a 3-over par 74.

Fernando Barco is also 58th at 5-over par 147 with rounds of 72-75. Barco double-bogeyed the first hole, but climbed back to 1-over par after nine holes. He bogeyed Nos. 10, 11 and 18 on the back nine for his second-round 75.

Purdue will paired with Auburn and California in Saturday's final round and will tee off hole No. 10 at 7:30 AM (CT) / 8:30 AM (ET). Purdue is looking for back-to-back NCAA Championships appearances for the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
