LUBBOCK, Texas -- Led by sophomore Austin Eoff's career-low 65, the Purdue men's golf team put itself in outstanding position after 18 holes at the NCAA Men's Golf Lubbock Regional.

The Boilermakers finished round one in a tie for fifth after 18 holes with a score of 5-under par 279. The score was the lowest of the year for the Boilermakers and the lowest 18-hole score during NCAA competition in school history. It was also tied for the 15th-lowest round in school history.

TEAM LEADERBOARD (TOP HALF)1) Texas 273 273 -112) Houston 274 274 -103) Duke 276 276 -84) Texas Tech 278 278 -65) PURDUE 279 279 -5 California 279 279 -57) Auburn 280 280 -48) Louisville 283 283 -1

"The positive is that I really think we left some shots out there and gave away a few at the end of the round," said Purdue head coach Rob Bradley. "Austin Eoff really carried us and Enzo Perez had a really solid round after a slow start. The other three didn't play their best, which is really encouraging, because I think we can play better as a whole. I like where we sit right now and think those guys will respond well tomorrow and Saturday."

The Boilermakers trail No. 2 Texas by six shots (-11) and No. 35-ranked Houston by five shots (-10). Duke is in third at 8-under par and is followed by Texas Tech at 6-under par in fourth place. The Boilermakers are tied with California for fifth at 5-under par, while No. 13-ranked Auburn is seventh at 4-under par.

Seven other teams are within 10 shots of leader Texas. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 29 - June 3, in Bradenton, Florida.

Eoff leads the tournament after scorching the front nine (his second nine holes). After making the turn at 1-under par, Eoff recorded birdies on his 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes playing his final nine holes in 5-under par 30 for a 6-under par 65. Eoff was 6-under par on the par-4 holes and finished with six birdies and 12 pars. Eoff hit all 18 greens in regulation today and finished his round with just 30 putts.

The 65 is the lowest Purdue score in NCAA competition and the fourth-best round in school history.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD (PURDUE PLACINGS) 1) Austin Eoff 65 -6T13) Enzo Perez 69 -2T42) Fernando Barco 72 +1T56) Brian Carlson 73 +2T64) Stuart Macdonald 75 +4

"Austin really carried us today and it's good to see him get it going like that," Bradley said. "He had been so close before, so for him to have a breakout round like that today is encouraging."

Meanwhile, senior Enzo Perez is tied for 13th after an opening-round, 2-under par 69. Perez was 2-over par after six holes, but played his final 11 holes with no bogeys and in 4-under par to match his season-low score.

"Enzo played really well after a slow start. He hung in there and started to make some putts and really did a good job controlling his game," Bradley said.

Sophomore Fernando Barco, who is playing in his first tournament since early March, showed no effects of rust early on as he was 2-under par through 16 holes. However, he ended his round with a double bogey-bogey on his 17th and 18th holes to fall to 1-over par 72 for his round.

"Fernando kind of let his round get away from him at the end, but he played very well up to that point," Bradley said. "But the round gave him some confidence after not playing competitively for a couple of months and I think he will be able to bounce back."

Freshman Brian Carlson finished with a 2-over par 73, but recorded a big birdie on his 18th hole to end his round. Carlson was 1-under par through nine holes, but four bogeys in his next seven holes dropped him to 3-over par, before the birdie on No. 9.

Stuart Macdonald finished with a 4-over par 75. Macdonald made his turn at even-par, but played his second nine holes (the front nine) in 4-over par to fall back. Nonetheless, Bradley thinks Macdonald will bounce back nicely tomorrow.

"Stuart didn't play poorly and had a little bad luck," Bradley said. "I walked with him today and he really struck the ball well. There are just a couple of things he needs to tune up, but he was right there today."

The Boilermakers will be paired on Friday with Texas Tech and California and will tee off No. 1 at 8:20 AM (CT) / 9:20 AM (ET).

Purdue is looking to advance to its second straight NCAA Golf Championship and 28th trip in school history.
