NEWBURGH, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team struggled in its final round at the 2015 Big Ten Golf Championships, finishing eighth with a score of 38-over par 1,190 (295-297-290-308) at Victoria National Golf Club.
Purdue couldn't sustain its success from yesterday's third round, managing just nine birdies in its final round in dropping three spots.
Austin Eoff finished tied for ninth at the Big Ten Championships.
The Achilles' heel all week was the final three holes and once again, the trio of finishing holes proved to be Purdue's undoing in the final round. The Boilermaker five played the final three holes in 16-over par today, making it 57-over par for the tournament during that span. Over the first 15 holes, Purdue played those holes in a combined 19-over par for the tournament.
The three holes played the hardest during the tournament with each hole averaging at least 0.50 strokes over par for the entire tournament.
Senior Enzo Perez led the Boilermakers in Sunday's final round with a 2-over par 74, to finish tied for 29th at 12-over par 300 (72-77-77-74). Perez was 1-under par through 15 holes before bogeying the final three holes to fall to 2-over par for his round.
Junior Stuart Macdonald shot a 3-over par 75 on Sunday to finish with a 72-hole total of 23-over par 311 (76-73-87-75). Macdonald was 2-under par through nine holes, but bogeyed three of the next five holes and then double-bogeyed No. 16 to fall back off the pace.
Sophomore Austin Eoff was Purdue's top finisher for the tournament, finishing tied for ninth with a 4-over par 292 (72-71-71-78). The Benton, Arkansas, native could not get anything going on the greens on Sunday, missing several birdie putts just off the mark. He started his round 4-over par through four holes, parred the next 13 holes before double-bogeying the 18th hole.
Senior Ben-Marvin Egel finished tied for 37th with a total of 15-over par 303 (75-76-71-81). Egel started slow with a triple-bogey on No. 2 and was 5-over par through five holes. Egel moved to 3-over par after 11 holes, before finishing bogey-par-bogey-par-double bogey-bogey-bogey to end his round.
Freshman Brian Carlson placed tied for 54th with a 22-over par score of 310 (76-82-71-81).
Purdue will now await word on a possible NCAA Regional berth, which will be announced on Monday, May 4, on the Golf Channel beginning at 10 AM (ET). Purdue's Golfstat ranking entering the Big Ten Championships was 59th and Purdue will finish with the required .500 record or better.
