WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Both of No. 20 Maryland's starting pitchers struck out 10 while not issuing a walk over seven innings, leading the Terrapins to a doubleheader sweep of Purdue baseball, 12-3 and 7-3, Friday evening at Alexander Field.
Kyle Johnson connected for a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap, his third long ball of the season and seventh as Boilermaker. But Purdue (13-30, 1-13 Big Ten) didn't score again while Robert Galligan (2-2) was on the mound. Johnson finished the night 3-for-6 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored.
Maryland ace Mike Shawaryn (10-0) limited the Boilers to four singles over seven innings while earning his 21st career win, establishing a new record for the Terrapins (30-13, 10-4 Big Ten) despite being just a sophomore. The right-hander has worked 20 consecutive scoreless innings and upped his Big Ten-leading strikeout total to 92 on the year.
Harry Shipley singled in both games to extend his reached base safely streak to 12 consecutive games, hitting safely in the last eight.
Maryland cleanup hitter Kevin Martir had three hits in both games and finished the night 6-for-9 with five RBI and four runs scored. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning of game one and delivered a two-run single in the opening frame of the nightcap.

Kevin Smith homered and scored three times in game one for the Terps. Jose Cuas came through with a two-out, two-run triple to break a 2-2 tie in the third inning of game two, making the Boilers pay for a one-out error and a two-out walk.
After allowing the first four batters of the nightcap to reach base safely, Purdue starter Matt Frawley (1-8) did not allow a hit to 10 straight batters. That streak ended with Cuas' triple. Frawley struck out four of five batters during that stretch, fanning the final two of the first inning and two more in a 1-2-3 top second. The sophomore finished with a career-high six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings of three-hit ball. However, three of the four walks he issued came around to score.
Joe Eichmann induced an inning-ending 5-3 double play off the bat of Cuas with the first pitch he threw in the top of the fifth.
Maryland scored in seven of the nine innings of game one, blowing it open with a four-run fifth. Six consecutive UMD batters reached base safely during the rally and the Terps send 10 men to the plate.
After Shawaryn was lifted following the seventh inning, the Boilers finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Maryland used three pitchers in the frame and they combined to walk five batters. Kyle Wood drove in the first run with an RBI ground out. Johnson and Jack Picchiotti later drew bases-loaded walks to force in runs.
Second baseman Cody Strong made the top defensive play of the night again, an impressive scoop and throw on the move to take an infield hit away from Kengo Kawahara in the eighth inning of game two.
The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
