NEWBURGH, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team overcame a tough end to its second round and surged in the third round to sit in a fifth-place tie after 54 holes at the 2015 Big Ten Golf Championship held at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana.
The Boilermakers are tied with defending champion Minnesota at 18-over par after rounds of 295-297-290, on the challenging par-72 layout. Purdue was in ninth place after the second round was completed this morning, but pieced together the fourth-best round of the day with a 2-over par 290 to move to fifth place.
Austin Eoff is in fifth place after 54 holes at the Big Ten Championship.
No. 4-ranked Illinois (-19) leads the championship over Ohio State (+13) after the Illini posted rounds of 284-281-280 to all but clinch the team title. However, the race for second place will be intense on Sunday as nine teams are within 12 shots of the Buckeyes. Iowa is third at 14-over par, followed by Penn State at 15-over par and Minnesota and Purdue at 18-over par. Northwestern is seventh at 21-over par, while Wisconsin is eighth at 22-over par. Michigan State and Maryland, which was third after 36 holes, are tied for ninth at 25-over par.
The Boilermakers again struggled late in both rounds today, as holes 16 thru 18 are proving to be a thorn in Purdue's side. In the first round, Purdue played the three holes in 11-over par, while playing the three holes in both the second and third rounds at 15-over par, going a combined 41-over par on the three holes. In the first 15 holes, Purdue is just six-over par.
Despite the late-round woes, Purdue is in the thick of the race for runner-up team honors, thanks in large part to the effort of sophomore Austin Eoff. Eoff is tied for fifth at 2-under par 214 after rounds of 72-71-71. Eoff is just six shots behind Illinois' Nick Hardy (-8) and leads the tournament field in par-3 scoring at 1-under par. Eoff was 3-under par for his round through 16 holes, before back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 dropped him to 2-under par for the tournament.
Ben-Marvin Egel rebounded from a tough end to his second round this morning with a 1-under par 71 to move into a tie for 21st place after 54 holes. Egel recorded four birdies against three bogeys in the third round, including an impressive birdie on the par-3 16th hole, one of just 13 birdies on the hole during round three.
Enzo Perez is in a 38th-place tie after rounds of 72-77-77 for a 54-hole total of 10-over par 226. Perez was even-par through 10 holes, but suffered a triple-bogey on No. 17 to fall off the pace.
Freshman Brian Carlson rebounded from a tough end to his second round with an impressive 1-under par 71 in the third round to move into a 47th-place tie at 13-over par 229 (76-82-71). Carlson was 3-under par through 14 holes before finishing with his first even-par round or better in Big Ten Championship play.
Stuart Macdonald is tied for 59th at 20-over par 236 (76-73-87).
The Boilermakers will tee off the final round at 9 AM (ET) / 8 AM (CT) off hole number 1 and will be paired with Minnesota and Penn State. Purdue is looking for its first top-three finish in the Big Ten Championship since 2007.
