ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan had at least one base runner in all 16 innings in which it batted and scored seven runs in both games to sweep a doubleheader with Purdue baseball, 7-0 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines (24-16, 9-6 Big Ten) out hit the Boilermakers 43-22 in the series and also got some strong performances on the mound. Ryan Nutof surrendered just two singles over 7 2/3 innings to lead his team to the shutout victory in game one. Brett Adcock struck out 10 over six innings in the nightcap.

Kyle Johnson and Brandon Krieg both connected for a solo homer in game two, increasing the Boilers' home run total to 12 in 12 games this month.

Purdue (12-27, 1-11 Big Ten) had the potential tying run on base in each of the final three innings of the nightcap, scoring three times with two outs in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game. But Michigan managed to score in six of the eight innings in which it batted and the insurance runs proved to be the difference in the game after the Boilers left six runners on base over the final three frames.

Purdue had runners on the corners with no outs in the seventh inning and didn't score, left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and could not capitalize on consecutive one-out singles in the ninth inning.

Michigan's Carmen Benedetti nearly single handedly lifted his team to victory in game two. At the plate, he doubled three times and drove in a run in each of his first four at-bats. As the first baseman, he made an impressive catch reaching over the fence in foul territory to snare a pop up off the bat of Cody Strong for the first out of the seventh inning. Purdue had runners on the corners at the time. And on the mound he struck out both batters he faced in the ninth inning to close out the game. The Big Ten's RBI leader finished the series 8-for-13 with 6 RBI. He was one of six Wolverines with at least six hits on the weekend.

Joe Eichmann struck out Benedetti with the bases loaded in the eighth inning of the nightcap. Unfortunately, he walked the next hitter to force in a run.

Matt Frawley (1-7) did not issue a walk over five innings of three-run ball as the starter in game two. He was unable to retire No. 2 hitter Jackson Glines, who scored all three runs. Glines finished the doubleheader 6-for-8 with four extra-base hits and the series 9-for-13.

Brett Haan (1-7) got off to a rough start in game one, giving up three runs on five singles and a sacrifice fly in the first inning. But after surrendering a solo home run in the bottom of the second, the senior regrouped and managed to put up four straight zeroes. He induced inning-ending ground ball double plays in the fourth and fifth innings.

Nutof (4-3) retired 13 consecutive batters from the fourth through eighth innings of game one. Purdue had only one base runner advance to second base through the first seven frames.

Five consecutive Boilers reached base safely with two outs in the eighth of the nightcap. Kyle Wood started the sequence with an RBI single and Kyle Johnson followed with a double to chase reliever Evan Hill. Brett Carlson greeted Michigan closer Bryan Pall with a two-run single through the left side that cut the deficit to 6-5. A bunt single by Jack Picchiotti and walk to pinch hitter Jordan Lewis loaded the bases before Pall was finally able to retire pinch hitter Daniel Sander on a fly ball to center field to end the frame.

Wood was 0-for-4 in game one to end his reached base safely streak at 16 straight Big Ten games dating back to last season.

Purdue returns to action Tuesday when it opens a six-game homestand with a midweek rematch against Indiana State. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
