NORMAN, Okla. -- Kyle Wood collected four hits to finish the weekend with three multi-hit efforts, but Purdue baseball came up on the short end of a Sunday slugfest with Oklahoma, 13-10, in the rubber game of the series.
Down 12-3 after the Sooners (12-6) scored five times in the bottom of the fifth, the Boilers (5-9) scored seven times over the final four innings and brought the potential tying run to the plate in the eighth inning. Purdue scored five times in the eighth, its biggest rally since scoring five in the sixth inning of a May 2013 win at Michigan.
Wood posted his first collegiate four-hit game, finishing the weekend 9-for-11 with seven RBI. He also walked twice Friday and had a sacrifice fly Sunday, giving him 12 productive plate appearances in 14 total trips to the dish. The junior connected for his 10th collegiate home run to lead off the fourth inning Sunday, his second long ball of the series. He has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games, batting .528 (19-for-36) during that stretch.
Michael Vilardo delivered a three-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. He extended his reached base safely streak to 12 consecutive games.
Oklahoma hit four home runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning. It was the most long balls surrendered by Purdue since an April 2013 loss at Illinois.
The Boilermakers lost their 10th straight rubber game dating back to May 2012. And for the 12th time since the opening weekend of Big Ten conference play in 2010, Purdue lost a series after winning the first game.
Four different Sooners had three hits. Oklahoma strung together three straight extra-base hits, including two home runs, to take the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning. Entering the frame, starter Matt Frawley had not surrendered an extra-base hit in 16 innings pitched this season. The Sooners scored three more times with two outs in the fourth and blew the game open with the five-run fifth.
Brett Carlson and Justin Gubser each had two hits Sunday and both singled against OU closer Jacob Evans, who the Sooners finally brought into the game after Purdue had cut the deficit to 13-8 with two outs in the top of the eighth. Wood and Carlson greeted Evans with consecutive RBI singles to bring Jordan Lewis to the plate representing the tying run. Gubser led off the ninth with a single as the Boilers had their leadoff man reach base safely in each of the final four innings.
Matt Gibbs was the first man out of the bullpen Sunday, but had to leave the game in the fifth inning after getting hit near the elbow on a line drive off the bat of Kolbey Carpenter. He faced only two batters. Alex Lyons had to warm up on the field and retired only one of the six batters he faced.
Taylor Alspaugh connected for the grand slam to right field. Sheldon Neuse homered for the second day in a row and finished the game 3-for-4. He would have had four hits but Purdue turned his bloop single into left center in the first inning into a fielder's choice when Kyle Johnson threw to second base in time for the force out.
Oklahoma starter Jeffrey Curran was lifted with one out in the fifth inning after reaching 80 pitches. He struck out seven on his two trips through the Boilers' lineup. The Sooners' starting pitchers recorded a combined 25 strikeouts in the series.
Purdue returns to action Friday when its hosts Northern Illinois for the home opener at Alexander Field. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
