SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Purdue men's golf team closed out an impressive effort over the final 36 holes and finished in a tie for second at the inaugural Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain.

The Boilermakers finished with a 9-over par 873 (300-291-285) to tie Michigan for second place, 12 shots behind No. 12-ranked Oregon (297-286-278=861). No. 36-ranked Florida was in fourth at 10-over par 874, while St. Mary's was fifth at 21-over par 885.

The story of the day for the Boilermakers was the play of freshman Brian Carlson. The Connecticut native posted the 14th-best round in school history, and fourth-best round by a Purdue freshman in school history, with a 6-under par 66. He recorded one eagle, six birdies and two bogeys on his round and played the final 12 holes in 7-under par.

He finished the tournament tied for ninth at 1-over par 217 (78-73-66). The 66 matched the tournament's low round.

Austin Eoff was actually Purdue's top finisher, placing seventh at even-par 216 (73-70-73). Eoff was 2-under par through nine holes, but a double-bogey on No. 10 dropped him to even par. Eoff would still be even-par through 16 holes before a bogey on No. 17, dropped him to 1-over par.

Nonetheless, it was his second top-10 finish of the season and fifth of his career.

Junior Stuart Macdonald finished in 12th place at 3-over par 219 (73-75-71). Macdonald had an up-and-down front nine with four birdies, two bogeys, one double-bogey and two pars, before recording eight pars and one birdie for his 1-under par round.

Ben-Marvin Egel placed 15th at 5-over par 221 (76-72-73). Egel was 3-over par through 15 holes, but registered birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to move to 1-over par and record his fourth top-20 finish of the season.

Enzo Perez finished tied for 41st at 16-over par 232 (84-75-73). Individually, Fernando Barco was 56th at 23-over par 239 (83-81-75).

Purdue will be in action next at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 21-22, in Lake Oconee, Georgia.
