GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Honorable Mention All-America acclaim for MacKenzie Tweardy in platform diving highlighted the third and final day of action at the NCAA Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
Tweardy closed out her collegiate career by finishing in fourth place in the consolation final (12th overall) of platform diving with a score of 294.15, earning All-America honors for the second year in a row. She improved on her prelims score by 12.05 points, but still dropped a couple spots after finishing 10th among a field of 42 divers in prelims.
With Mary Beth Dunnichay claiming All-America acclaim with a fifth-place finish in the championship final of 1-meter diving Thursday, the Purdue women had multiple All-American divers for the sixth time in the last seven years.
Fellow seniors Francesca Marr (200 breast) and Rhiannon Sheets (200 fly) also competed in their final collegiate events Saturday. Emily Fogle has applied for a sixth-year hardship waiver from the NCAA and is expected to return for the 2015-16 season.
The Boilermakers had scoring finishes in three events at NCAAs this weekend - 1-meter diving, platform diving and the 800 freestyle relay. Six of the nine Purdue student-athletes who competed at the national championship meet this year earned All-America honors.
The Boilermakers finished in 30th place among the 46 scoring teams at the NCAA Championships with 29 team points.
Dunnichay nearly joined Tweardy in the consolation final of platform diving but finished two spots shy of qualifying with an 18th-place showing in prelims. She competed in all three diving events this weekend in her first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Purdue also had multiple representatives in the 200 breaststroke and 1650 free Saturday. Marr and Fogle finished 39th and 42nd in the prelims of the 200 breast, respectively. Allie Davis and Kaersten Meitz placed 33rd and 34th in the mile, respectively. Davis and Meitz also competed in three individual events at NCAAs this weekend.
The Boilermakers will have to bid adieu to Marr, Sheets, Tweardy and the rest of their large, accomplished senior class. NCAAs qualifiers Abby Jagdfeld, Nika Karlina Petric, Davis, Dunnichay, Fogle and Meitz headline the student-athletes expected to return for the 2015-16 season.
