PALM COAST, Fla. -- The Purdue men's golf team recorded its second straight day of splitting its two matches and finished sixth at the Big Ten Match Play Championship that concluded Monday at the Hammock Beach Resort.

The Boilermakers finished the two-day event with a 2-2-0 record, defeating second-seeded Ohio State, 3-2-0, in the consolation bracket, before falling in the first tiebreaker to fifth-seeded Northwestern, 2-2-1.

Enzo Perez went 2-1-0 in the Big Ten Match Play Championship.

Purdue entered the tournament as the eighth overall seed and its two losses came by a 3-2-0 margin to the nation's No. 1-ranked team, Illinois, and in a tiebreaker to Northwestern.

In the day's first match in the consolation bracket against second-seeded Ohio State, the Boilermakers rallied on the back nine to earn the come-from-behind victory.

In the day's first match, freshman Brian Carlson was 2-down through 12 holes, but then won five of the next six holes to defeat Logan Jones, 3-and-1.

Stuart Macdonald then continued his strong weekend with a 4-and-3 win over Boo Timko in the third slot. Macdonald was even-par through 15 holes and won seven holes to Timko's three, leading 4-up through nine holes.

Ben-Marvin Egel then capped off Purdue's victory with yet another rally in the No. 2 position. Egel was 3-down through 12 holes, before winning five of the last six holes for a 2-up victory.

In the fifth-place match, the Boilermakers lost to Northwestern on the first tiebreaker, falling to the Wildcats, 2-2-1. The first tiebreaker is to add up the number of "ups" for each team. Northwestern won 4-and-3 and 7-and-5, giving the Wildcats 11 "ups" to Purdue's 9 "ups" (5-and-3 and 4-and-3).

Enzo Perez had a strong performance at the No. 5 slot, defeating Sam Triplett, 5-and-3. Perez was 1-down after nine holes, but then won six straight holes to win 3-and-1. Perez played the final six holes of the match in 3-under par.

In the No. 2 slot, Egel got off to a red-hot start, winning the first three holes. After Northwestern's Matthew Negri won hole Nos. 4 and 5, Egel then won five straight holes to take a 6-up lead after 10 holes, before cruising to the 4-and-3 victory. Egel played the match's first 10 holes in 5-under par, which included two bogeys.

The last match to finish was a classic match at the No. 1 slot between Austin Eoff and Bennett Lavin. The match never featured a lead of more than one hole from either player and Eoff didn't grab a lead until the 15th hole. After halving Nos. 16 and 17, Lavin then won the 18th hole to halve the match and give Northwestern the victory on a tiebreaker.

Purdue will be in action next week at the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday through Tuesday in Rio Grande, P.R. The field includes several of the top teams in the country.
