PALM COAST, Fla. -- The Purdue men's golf team split on the opening day of the Big Ten Match Play Championship, defeating Michigan State, 4-1-0, in the opening round, before falling to the nation's No. 1-ranked team, 3-2-0, in the quarterfinals.

The Boilermakers will open play in the consolation bracket on Monday morning at 7:30 AM (ET) against second-seeded Ohio State on the Ocean Course at the Hammock Beach Resort. Ohio State fell to seventh-seeded Michigan, 3-2-0, in the quarterfinals.

In the opening match against the Spartans, the Boilermakers got solid performances and timely rallies up-and-down the lineup to advance to the quarterfinals against Illinois.

Enzo Perez, back in the lineup for the first time since the opening weekend of the fall season, jumped out to a 6-up lead through eight holes and cruised to a 5-and-4 victory at the No. 5 position.

Ben-Marvin Egel lost just one hole en route to a 5-and-4 victory at the No. 2 position. Egel was 4-up through 10 holes, then ended the match with a par on hole No. 14. Through the 14 holes, Egel played the round in 3-under par.

Stuart Macdonald then rallied for a 1-up victory at the No. 3 slot. Macdonald was 2-up through four holes, but found himself trailing 1-down through 13 holes. Macdonald then won the next two holes and played even the last three holes for a 1-up victory. Macdonald played his round in even-par.

Austin Eoff also rallied in his opening match for a 2-up victory. Eoff was 2-down through six holes and was still 1-down through 11 holes, before mounting a rally. Eoff won four of the last seven holes en route to the win.

In the quarterfinals match against the Illinois, the Illini steadily pulled away in three of the five matches, winning them by identical 4-and-3 scores.

However, Stuart Macdonald won four of the last six holes after being all-square through 12 holes, for the 2-up victory over Nick Hardy, the No. 52-ranked golfer in the country.

Eoff had a remarkable comeback on the back nine in his win over Danielson. Trailing 2-down through nine holes, Eoff won three of the last five holes and played the last four holes in 3-under par to earn the victory. He capped off the win with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole for the 1-up victory.

The Boilermakers face Ohio State in the consolation bracket and will take on either Minnesota or Northwestern in the fifth or seventh-place match Monday afternoon.
