MINNEAPOLIS -- Marat Amaltdinov's new freshman record in the 200 breaststroke while finishing as the runner-up in the A final of the event highlighted day two of action at the Arena/Minnesota Grand Prix.
Lyam Dias and Amaltdinov each qualified for the A final of a breaststroke event for the second day in a row. Amaltdinov initially broke the Purdue freshman record with a time of 1:55.59 while being the top qualifier in the prelims. He improved on his time (1:54.46) by more than a second in the A final but finished second behind USA Swimming National Team member BJ Johnson (1:53.80), who shaved three seconds off his prelim time. Dias took fourth in the race while improving on his prelim time by more than two seconds (1:55.22).
Amaltdinov eclipsed the longest-standing record in the Purdue record book. Vilmos Kovacs' 200 breast freshman mark (1:57.41) had stood since 1996. Amaltdinov ranks second to only Dias (1:53.06) overall as well.
Guillermo Blanco and Danny Conway both qualified for the A final of the 200 butterfly and moved up on the Purdue all-time Top 10 list in the event.
"There were great performances by all our guys tonight," Purdue head coach Dan Ross said. "Even when they have a bad race they pick themselves up and get after the next race. I'm very proud of the team. Blanco and Conway in the 200 fly as well as Marat and Lyam in breast tonight were special though. Great relay battles and guys caring about their teammates makes for something special with this group."
Blanco finished third in A final of the 200 butterfly and moved up to second place in the record book with a time of 1:45.53. Conway was fourth and improved on his seventh-fastest time (1:47.07) in program history.
Blanco also anchored Purdue's top 800 free relay team to a runner-up finish, teaming with Josh Ehrman, Jared Schimmelpfenning and Nate Hopkins.
Ted Curtiss (C final of 100 back) and Josh Brooks (D final of 200 fly) won their finals heats in the evening session.
Action at the three-day Arena/Minnesota Grand Prix concludes Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 7 p.m. ET.
