WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Led by five multiple-event winners, Purdue women's swimming and diving was victorious in all 16 events in a 199-94 season-opening dual meet victory against Miami (Ohio) Friday evening at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The Purdue men also competed Friday. The divers dominated the springboard events to open up a 32-6 lead that will carry over to the Oct. 30 Purdue-Miami men's dual in Oxford. The swimmers competed against each other in an intrasquad meet Friday. The Gold Team won eight of the 11 individual events to emerge victorious, 140-101.
Freshman Abby Jagdfeld led all competitors by winning three individual events - the 50, 200 and 500 free - in her collegiate debut. Her high school teammate Kaersten Meitz already broke the 10-minute mark (9:58.33) while winning the 1,000 free in her first collegiate race. In doing so, she moved into ninth place in program history.
In her first college meet since the Purdue Invitational in November 2012, Emily Fogle was victorious in the 100 breaststroke. Fellow seniors Francesca Marr (200 breast and 200 IM) and Rhiannon Sheets (100 free and 200 fly) were also among the Boilers' multiple-event winners.
Mary Beth Dunnichay swept the diving events and Hannah Manger opened her sophomore campaign with a sweep of the backstroke events. Alex Todd won the 100 butterfly and joined Kylie Vogel, Fogle and Manger on the victorious 200 medley relay team to open the meet.
Meagan Lim (100 back and 200 IM), Nika Karlina Petric (200 and 500 free) and Vogel (50 free and 100 fly) each finished as the runner-up in a pair of events.
For the men, USA Diving national champion Steele Johnson won from the 3-meter springboard in his collegiate debut. His score of 422.40 is already good for fourth in program history. Jamie Bissett won from the 1-meter springboard and finished second to Johnson on 3-meter.
Guillermo Blanco (200 fly and 200 IM), Filip Bujoczek (200 and 500 free) and Stephen Seliskar (100 back and 100 fly) for the Gold Team in the men's intrasquad. Blanco and Seliskar also teamed up with Lyam Dias and Adam Johnston on the victorious 200 medley relay team to begin the meet.
Alex Toetz (200 back) and Dias (100 breast) were individual winners for Gold as well. Alumnus Danny Tucker competed for the Black Team and swept the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints, posting a time of 19.96 in the 50.
The Boilermakers close out their season-opening weekend Saturday with the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet, which will feature 11 colleges from the around the state this year.
