COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Purdue men's golf team turned in its best performance of the young season, en route to a second-place finish at the 12-team Jack Nicklaus Invitational held at Ohio State's University Scarlet Course over the weekend.

Under perfect conditions both yesterday and today, the Boilermakers finished the 54-hole event with a score of 19-over par 871 (288-292-291) to finish 12 shots behind winner and tournament host Ohio State. Troy was third at 21-over par 873, while Kent State and East Tennessee State finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

For the first time this year, the Boilermakers had all five competitors finish in the top 40 after achieving it twice last year at the season-opening D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate (Sept. 15-16, 2013) and the Big Ten Championship (May 2-4, 2014). If you include Philippe Schweizer, who finished tied for 17th competing as an individual, the Boilermakers occupied six of the top 41 positions.

Purdue was poised to make a run towards its first tournament title since April 2011 on Monday, trailing Ohio State by a mere four shots through 13 holes, when the Boilermakers ran into trouble on the par-4 14th. Purdue played the hole in 5-over par, while Ohio State played the hole in just 1-over par.

Over the final five holes, the Purdue contingent (Schweizer included) was 13-over par, thus ending Purdue's chances at the tournament title. Nonetheless, it was Purdue's fourth runner-up finish in 17 events during the Rob Bradley era.

Leading Purdue for the weekend was junior Stuart Macdonald, who finished tied for sixth at 2-over par 215 (72-69-74). Macdonald was just one shot out of the lead through 13 holes, when a double bogey-bogey stretch on Nos. 14 and 15 knocked him out of contention. However, it was his second career top-10 finish and highest placing of the season.

Sophomore Austin Eoff also had a promising weekend, finishing in a 14th-place tie at 5-over par 218 (70-75-73). It was Eoff's highest finish of the season after recording three top-10 placings as a freshman. All three of Eoff's rounds were used in the counting score, running his career total to 44-of-48 (.917) rounds used on the counting team, including 18 straight rounds dating back to last year's first round of the Big Ten Championship on May 2.

Senior Ben-Marvin Egel recorded his third top-20 performance in as many events with a T-20th finish at 7-over par 220 (75-72-73). Egel was 1-under par through 13 holes, before a double bogey on No. 14 and a bogey on No. 16 dropped him off the pace.

Sophomore Fernando Barco recorded his second-best finish of his career with a T-28th placing at 9-over par 222 (71-78-73). Barco was even-par through 13 holes, but played the final five holes in 2-over par to fall out of the top 20.

Freshman Brian Carlson continued his improvement with a team-best 1-over par 72 to finish tied for 40th at 13-over par 226 (78-76-72). Carlson started his day with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 and was even-par through 16 holes, before bogeying No. 17 to finish 1-over par for the day.

Lastly, competing as an individual, Philippe Schweizer finished tied for 18th at 6-over par 219 (74-71-74). Schweizer had another rollercoaster round, registering four birdies, five bogeys, one double-bogey and eight pars on his round. He ranked second in the tournament field with 13 birdies this weekend.

The Boilermakers will be off next weekend before competing in the Ball State Invitational on Oct. 13 and 14 at the Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
