SKOKIE, Ill. -- The Purdue men's golf team regrouped after a tough first round and rallied to finish in a sixth-place tie at the Windon Memorial Classic held at the par-70 Evanston Golf Club on Sunday and Monday.

The Boilermakers finished the 54-hole event at 19-over par 859 (291-284-284) to tie with Lamar for sixth place. No. 16-ranked California won the event at 6-under par 834 (285-279-270) and was followed by Ohio State (847), Iowa (849), Michigan (849) and Marquette (856).

Purdue's combined score of 859 was tied for the 13th-lowest score in school history, although it came on a par-70 layout. The Boilermakers' score of 8-over par 568 over the final 36 holes would have ranked the Boilermakers tied for fourth as their slow start in the first round was too much to overcome.

With the exception of last year's NCAA Tournament, Purdue has finished in the top half of every tournament it has played in during the Rob Bradley era.

Senior Ben-Marvin Egel continued his torrid early-season start, leading the Boilermakers with a 1-under par 209 (72-70-67), good for a fourth-place tie. His final round of 3-under par 67 was a career-low round, as was his 209 total, which bettered his previous career-best round by eight shots.

Egel has now placed in the top five of each competition this year after finishing third at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Prior to this year, Egel's best finish was ninth as a freshman at the 36-hole Butler Spring Invitational in March 2012. His previous best 54-hole finish was a T-24th showing at the Windon Memorial Classic in October 2012.

Egel is making his mark in the final round this year, compiling a 68.50 average during the final 18 holes, a combined 5-under par.

Sophomore Austin Eoff finished in a tie for 32nd with a 7-over par 217 (70-73-74). Eoff could never get it going on Monday, starting his day bogey-double bogey and playing the remaining 16 holes in 1-over par. Nonetheless, Eoff had all three rounds count towards the team score and now has had an amazing 41.0 of his 45.0 career rounds (.911) used on the counting team.

Junior Stuart Macdonald finished in a tie for 45th at 10-over par 220 (74-75-71), turning in his best round on Monday. Macdonald was 2-over par through 15 holes, when back-to-back birdies got him to even par through 17 holes. A bogey on No. 18 dropped him to 1-over par for the day.

Sophomore Fernando Barco finished in a tie for 59th at 12-over par 222 (75-67-80) and sophomore Philippe Schweizer was tied for 69th at 15-over par (79-74-72).

Freshman Brian Carlson competed as an individual, finishing in a tie for 54th at 11-over par (76-76-69). Carlson showed promise in the final round, tallying an eagle and four birdies to offset five bogeys for the best round of his brief career.

Purdue will have a short turnaround as it heads to the Jack Nicklaus Invitational next Sunday and Monday in Columbus, Ohio. Teams scheduled to compete are East Tennessee State, Georgia Regents (formerly Augusta State), Kansas State, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee State, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, Pepperdine, Purdue, Troy and Tulsa.
