Boilermakers In Seventh After 36 Holes at the Windon Memorial Classic

Fernando Barco is 18th after 36 holes at the Windon Memorial Classic.

SKOKIE, Ill. -- The Purdue men's golf team posted the third-best score of the second round to move up seven spots and sit in a seventh-place tie after 36 holes at a blustery, par-70 Evanston Country Club and the 18th annual Windon Memorial Classic.

The Boilermakers shot a 36-hole total of 15-over par 575 after rounds of 291 and 284, respectively. Purdue was in 14th place after the opening 18 holes, but shot just a 4-over par 284 to rally to seventh after 36 holes, just seven shots out of fourth place.

Purdue hopes to carry its momentum from the final nine holes of the day, where the Boilermakers surged by shooting a counting score of 1-under par on their final nine holes of the day.

California leads the 15-team field with a 36-hole total of 4-over par 564 (285-279=564), followed by Michigan (281-284=565), Ohio State (284-281=565), Iowa (283-285=568), Marquette (283-286=569) and Notre Dame (289-285=574). Purdue is tied with Lamar in seventh place.

Sophomore Fernando Barco turned in the second-best 18-hole score of the day in the second round and leads the Purdue contingent with a 2-over par 142, good for an 18th-place tie after 36 holes. Barco recorded an opening-round 75, but then tallied four birdies against one bogey in the second round for his career-best score overall score (67) and in relation to par (-3).

Senior Ben-Marvin Egel continued his consistent play, tying Barco for the team lead at 2-over par after scores of 72-70. In the first round, Egel suffered three straight bogeys on his fifth, sixth and seventh holes played, but then parred his last 11 holes for an opening-round 72. He then had three birdies and three bogeys in his second round to record an even-par 70.

Sophomore Austin Eoff is tied for 26th at 3-over par 143 (70-73). Eoff had 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey in the opening round, but started his second round 4-over par after 10 holes. A birdie on his 16th hole moved him back to 3-over par for the day.

Junior Stuart Macdonald is 65th at 9-over par 149 (74-75) and sophomore Philippe Schweizer is 75th at 13-over par 153 (79-74). Freshman Brian Carlson is competing as an individual and is tied for 72nd at 12-over par 152 (76-76).

Final round action will begin tomorrow at 9 AM (ET) at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Illinois. Purdue will be paired with Tennessee and Lamar in the final round.

BOILERMAKER NOTES
- Purdue recorded the third-best Par-3 average of the day (3.15), but struggled on Par-4s (10th; 4.22) and Par-5s (13th; 4.85).
- Purdue recorded the fewest birdies of the first two rounds (14), but had the most pars (129).
- Fernando Barco's 67 in the second round was a career-best score.
- Austin Eoff leads the tournament field in pars made (30).
- Eoff and Barco are tied for the tournament lead in Par-3 scoring (-1).
