HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- A trio of underclassmen led the Purdue men's golf team to maintain its placing entering the final round of the NCAA Golf Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Purdue shot a 9-over par 289 to wrap up its first 36 holes at 15-over par 575 (286-289). Scoring conditions were considerably tougher on Sunday afternoon as a stiff southerly breeze that gusted to 30 MPH greeted the golfers and made scoring difficult.
Just one team, Texas (-2), finished the afternoon wave in under par and the next best round was a 4-over par 284 by UCLA.
Sophomore Stuart Macdonald continued his strong NCAA Championship play with an even-par round of 70, and is in a 50th-place tie at 2-over par 142. Macdonald was 3-over par after 11 holes, but birdied three of the next five holes to surge back to even-par, before parring out for an even-par round. The 70 ties a career-low round, also set during last weekend's NCAA Central Regional and the Boilermaker Invitational.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer also had an impressive round with a 2-over par 72 for a 36-hole total of 141, good for a 40th-place tie. Schweizer found trouble immediately in his round, bogeying his second hole and registering a triple-bogey on No. 4. However, Schweizer buckled down and recorded birdies on his ninth, 14th and 17th holes, before a tough-break bogey on his 18th hole dropped him back to 2-over par.
Freshman Austin Eoff also had to fight during his round, tallying a 2-over par 72 for a 36-hole total of 147 (75-72). Eoff was 3-over par after seven holes before a birdie on his 8th hole moved him to 2-over par for his round. However, he gave it right back on his 9th hole. He then parred six straight holes before an eagle on the par-5 7th hole improved him to 1-over par. He bogeyed his 18th hole, settling for a 2-over par round of 72.
Junior Enzo Perez had a strong opening nine, playing the first nine holes in even par with birdies on 13, 16, 17 after starting his round with a double-bogey on No. 10. However, he played his second nine in 5-over par, including a double-bogey on the par-3 4th hole to finish with a 5-over par 75. Perez played the par-3s in 4-over par during the second round.
Senior Adam Schenk was never able to get it going in the second round, finishing his day at 10-over par 80 for a 36-hole total of 150 (70-80).
The Boilermakers completed the second round at approximately 3:50 p.m. (CT) and after pairing the teams, teed off with Kentucky and Georgia to play as many holes as possible before dark sets in on Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The goal still remains a top-eight finish, which would move the Boilermakers into the match-play finals to be contested on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Boilermakers will need one of their best rounds of the year to reach the finals, sitting 12 shots out of eighth place currently held by UCLA at 3-over par 563.
