WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 42nd-ranked Purdue women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 16 Michigan in the regular season finale for both teams while playing outdoors Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. It was just the second time this season that the Boilermakers had been shutout, moving their record to 11-9, 7-4 Big Ten and they finish with a 6-2 mark at home. The 19-3, 11-0 Big Ten Wolverines took home their fifth straight Big Ten title with the win.
Michigan captured the doubles points with victories from its two ranked duos. First, No. 68 Ronit Yurovsky and Laura Ucros defeated Purdue's Krisztina Kapitany and Natalia Davila while playing in the No. 2 spot. The 12th-ranked team of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender followed with an 8-3 defeat of Mara Schmidt and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum at No. 1.
The Wolverines' attack was relentless as play shifted to singles. They recorded straight-set victories from three of their four ranked individuals to clinch the dual. Michigan also won in straight sets at No. 4.
Purdue's Andjela Djokovic and Claudia Escribens were able to rebound from first set losses at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, respectively, to force 10-point tiebreakers. Escribens dropped the first set of her spring campaign, a 6-3 decision in the first to Ucros. The sophomore battled back in the second and took it 6-4. In the race to 10, it was the Wolverine to get there first to take the match, 10-5, as the fourth singles match to finish. Escribens' record now stands at 6-1.
Djokovic fell to No. 113 Amy Zhu, 6-4, in the opening set and responded with a 7-5 victory in the second. Everything went Zhu's way in the breaker, winning 10-4, to close the match in the last contest out on the courts. The freshman had her six-match win streak come to a halt as she moved to 14-5 in her rookie season.
Up next for the Purdue women's tennis team will be the Big Ten Tournament hosted by Northwestern April 24-27 in Evanston, Ill. Details regarding the tournament can be found here.
