WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Stuart Macdonald continued his excellent play on Easter Sunday, finishing fourth overall and helping the Purdue men's golf team improve its placing by three spots to finish seventh in the 15-team Boilermaker Invitational held at the Kampen Course this weekend.
Purdue carded a three-over par 291 during Sunday's final round to finish the tournament in seventh place with a 24-over par 888 (298-299-291). Iowa rallied in the final round with a fantastic effort of 14-under par 274 to finish one shot ahead of Illinois (866) with a 1-over par 865 (300-291-274). UCLA was third, Lousville fourth, Ohio State fifth and Northwestern sixth to finish ahead of the Boilermakers.
Macdonald, who entered the weekend having played on the counting squad only once in his career, cemented his spot on the roster with a 54-hole score of 3-under par 213 (71-70-72). He entered the final round in first and it took three remarkable rounds by Iowa's Steven Ihm (64 on Sunday), Louisville's Robin Sciot-Siegrist (67 on Sunday) and UCLA's Lorens Chan (67 on Sunday) to unseat him from the top spot.
Macdonald's 213 was a career-best 54-hole score by seven strokes as was his fourth-place finish (previous best was tied-21st). Prior to the tournament, Macdonald had recorded zero rounds of even-par or better efforts.
Freshmen Austin Eoff and Philippe Schweizer rebounded from rough second rounds to card even-par rounds of 72 on Sunday and finish in a tie for 39th place at 8-over par 224.
Senior Adam Schenk could never get it going during the weekend and finished in a tie for 58th at 13-over par 229 and junior Enzo Perez finished tied for 65th at 15-over par 231.
Individually, Fernando Barco was 26th at 6-over par 222 that featured a career-low 70 in Sunday's final round. Justin Cho placed 34th at 7-over par 223 and Sam Fu was 58th at 13-over par 229.
The Boilers will take next weekend off before traveling to French Lick, Ind., for the Big Ten Championships on May 2-4.
