WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A balanced attack throughout the lineup helped the 42nd-ranked Purdue women's tennis team make easy work of No. 67 Michigan State as the Boilermakers posted a 5-2 victory Saturday on the outdoor courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. Head coach Laura Glitz earned her 90th win in seven years at the helm as her team improved to 11-8, 7-3 Big Ten. Krisztina Kapitany was credited with the clinching the dual match to set the Spartans back to 17-7, 5-5 Big Ten.
"Overall today I thought we did a good job," Glitz said. "We needed to come out with intensity from the first point to the last. We needed to have a positive attitude and be disciplined to complete the point. We wanted to overwhelm them [Michigan State] with our intensity; we couldn't be tentative. That all happened today and we had a good effort."
The intensity that Coach Glitz asked for was delivered as the Boilermakers stormed out in doubles. Nicole Robinson and Claudia Escribens easily bypassed Catherine Parenteau and Athena Trouillot, 8-4, to give Purdue the early advantage. The freshman/sophomore duo moved their overall record to 7-5 and 6-2 in the Big Ten while playing at the No. 3 position.
Michigan State evened the best of three series by winning at the No. 1 spot. The 62nd-ranked pair of Marina Bohrer and Erin Faulkner came from behind to defeat Mara Schmidt and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, 8-6. The critical point rested on the play of Kapitany and Natalia Davila and the duo didn't disappoint. They disposed of Spartans Catherine Parenteau and Athena Trouillot, 8-4, to pick up their third win playing side by side.
It was the 11th time this season that the doubles point went the Boilermakers' way. They now own a 9-2 mark overall and are 7-0 against Big Ten competition when they win the point.
Purdue opened singles action by winning the first two matches to build a 3-0 lead. Playing at the No. 6 spot, Escribens captured her sixth straight victory to remain undefeated by dominating Trouillot, 6-0, 6-2. Robinson followed with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Parenteau at No. 3 for the 10th win of her rookie campaign.
A straight-set win at No. 2 by Faulkner got Michigan State on the board at 2-1. The Spartan used a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 match to get past Bernard-Feigenbaum, dealing the sophomore just her second loss in Big Ten play.
Kapitany rallied from a 6-3 loss in the first set to Meyers in the No. 4 spot to clinch the dual for Purdue. The sophomore from Budapest, Hungary, took the second and third sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, respectively, while earning her 12th singles victory.
Freshman Andjela Djokovic added to the Boilermakers' lead, 5-1, with a marathon win as the No. 5 singles against Olga Chernova. Djokovic took the first set in the breaker, 7-6 (7-3), only to have the Spartan return the favor in the second, 7-6 (7-5). With the dual match already decided, a 10-point tiebreaker was used in lieu of a third set. The deciding breaker was all Djokovic, taking it 10-5, to win her sixth straight while pushing her rookie year record to 14-4.
Michigan State closed out the match by getting its second team point by way of Bohrer in the No. 1 spot. The 112th-ranked Spartan defeated Schmidt in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Purdue women's tennis team will close out the regular season by hosting No. 16 Michigan (18-3, 10-0 Big Ten) on Senior Day on Sunday. First serves from the Schwartz Tennis Center will be tossed at 12 p.m. ET.
