WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex showed its teeth on Saturday as the Purdue men's golf team strugged in the first 36 holes of the 15-team Boilermaker Invitational, finishing the first day in 10th place at 21-over par 597 (298-299).
No. 9-ranked Illinois leads the tournament with a 5-over par 581 while Louisville is second at 10-over par 586. No. 14-ranked UCLA is third at 12-over par 588. Iowa is fourth at 15-over par 591 and seven more teams, including Purdue, are within seven shots of the Hawkeyes.
Despite being 10th, Purdue is just six shots behind the fourth-place Hawkeyes.
Despite playing their home course under nearly flawless conditions on Saturday, the Boilermakers shot two of their three worst rounds of the season with its 298 and 299. The other came during the second round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational on Sept. 29, 2013, with a 305.
While most Boilermakers struggled, sophomore Stuart Macdonald flourished. The Vancouver, B.C., native leads the field after firing rounds of 71-70=141 to sit at 3-under par, one shot ahead of Ohio State's Boo Timko (76-66=142). Macdonald's second-round 70 equaled a career-low round and he was the only player in the field to record a pair of under-par rounds.
Macdonald is looking for his first career top-20 finish, and is attempting to become the first Boilermaker to win an individual crown since Adam Schenk won this event in 2011.
However, Macdonald was the only Boilermaker to rank in the field's top 40 players. Freshmen Austin Eoff (72-80) and Philippe Schweizer (77-75) are tied for 46th at 8-over par 152, Schenk is tied for 63rd after rounds of 78-76=154 (+10) and Enzo Perez is 70th at 12-over par 156 (78-78).
Three Boilermakers are also competing as individuals, as Justin Cho is 32nd at 6-over par 150 (76-74), Fernando Barco is tied for 46th at 8-over par 152 (73-79) and Sam Fu is tied for 63rd at 10-over par 154 (74-80).
The final 18 holes will tee off at 8:45 a.m., at the Kampen Course.
