CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - No. 6 Illinois snapped the 54th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team's six-match winning streak by defeating the Boilermakers, 5-2, Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center. Aaron Dujovne and Mateus Silva were credited with the Boilermakers' victories as they move to 7-2, 1-1 Big Ten. The Fighting Illini improved to 8-4, 2-0 Big Ten with the win.
The doubles point went to Illinois with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Purdue's Diego Acosta and Dujovne had fourth-ranked Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon on the ropes, but slipped in the breaker, 8-7 (6-0). At No. 3, Mark Kovacs and Silva dropped an 8-4 contest to Julian Childers and Blake Bazarnik.
Singles play ensued with both ranked individuals, No. 23 for the Fighting Illini posting wins to give their team a 3-0 advantage. Purdue's Dujovne had split the first two sets with Guignon before the Illinois player was defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct to pick up a point for the Boilermakers at No. 4.
The Fighting Illini responded by posting back-to-back wins at Nos. 3 and 5 to seal the dual match before Silva emerged victories in a tight battle, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (4) over Childers at the six spot to improve to 8-1.
The Boilermakers will take a week off before heading to the West Coast to play in the San Diego Invite during spring break. They return to Basham Courts March 28 for a 1 p.m. match against Minnesota.
