- USF Invitational Final Resulta
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The No. 36-ranked Purdue men's golf team recorded a school-record 270 (-18) to vault into a tie for fourth place on the final day of the USF Invitational. The Boilermakers recorded their seventh top-five finish in eight events so far during the 2013-14 season.
Quite simply, the Boilermakers were sizzling during the third round. The 18-under par score of 270 smashed the school record of 277 set six previous times, the last time coming during the Turning Stone Tiger Invitational in September 2011.
In addition, Purdue's tournament score of 24-under par 840 also set a new 54-hole tournament record, crushing the previous record of 848 set during the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in October 2005.
Purdue was under par as a team all three days, compiling rounds of 283-287-270=840 on the par-72 (288) Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
No. 20-ranked Florida State won the team title with a score of 41-under par 823, including a 24-under par 264 in today's final round. No. 33-ranked USF was second at 31-under par 833, when UNC Greensboro was third at 26-under par 838.
The Boilermakers tied for fourth with Big Ten rival and seventh-ranked Illinois and 35th-rated Mercer.
Once again, the Boilermakers were paced by senior Adam Schenk, who finished in a tie for second, one shot behind Florida State's Jack Maguire, who needed a 10-under 62 today to surge to the title.
One week after tying the second-best round in school history at the Puerto Rico Classic with an 11-under par 205, Schenk surpassed that total this week. Schenk ended the tournament with a 15-under par 201 on rounds of 65-70-66.
His 201 is just one shot off the school-record 200 set by Pariya Junhasavasdikul at the Western Intercollegiate in March 2007.
Over the last two tournaments, Schenk has played the two events in a combined 26-under par, registering 33 birdies, 70 pars and just five holes of bogey or worse.
Enzo Perez recorded the best score of his career in the third round with a 6-under par 66, en route to a 16th-place finish at 5-under par 211 (74-71-66). Perez jumped 20 spots on the final day for his second top-20 finish of the year and sixth of his career.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer also turned in a career-low round with a 5-under par 67. He would jump 25 places during the final round to finish in 44th place at 1-over par 217 (77-73-67).
Both Perez and Schweizer bested their career-low 18-hole scores by three strokes. Freshman Fernando Barco rounded out Purdue's scoring with a 1-under par 71 to finish in 73rd place with scores of 75-77-71=223 (+7).
Freshman Austin Eoff placed 44th after shooting a 3-over par 75 today for a three-day tally of 69-73-75=217 (+1).
Purdue will be off until March 24-25 when it will compete in the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
