WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 41st-ranked Purdue men's tennis team (11-3, 3-1 Big Ten) continued its winning ways, capturing its fourth straight match with a 7-0 shutout of No. 63 Wisconsin (9-9, 1-3 Big Ten) Sunday on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers once again showed great poise when going up against ranked opponents, defeating their sixth ranked foe of the season and have held three scoreless. They have yet to suffer a loss at home, owning an 8-0 mark.
"It's Big Ten season, every weekend you have to put records aside," head men's tennis coach Pawel Gajdzik said. "Wisconsin is a very talented team. They gave us 100 percent and we matched it. We went out and dominated in doubles and then we were able to get some decisive victories with the bottom of our lineup. They are tough on top and that showed, but we are mentally tough. We took care of business and got the win."
The Boilermakers earned the doubles point for the 10th time this season, giving them the advantage early with the 1-0 lead over Wisconsin. Purdue showed no signs of struggle, taking the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles by a score of 8-2. First in the No. 1 spot, Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne beat the Badgers' duo of Oskar Wikberg and Jakhongir Jalalov. Mark Kovacs and Mateus Silva followed at No. 3 against their opponents, Elliott Sprecher and John Zordani.
In the No. 6 singles spot, Silva, the native from Campinas Brazil, conquered yet another opponent winning 6-3, 6-0 over Zordani adding to his 10-match winning streak. It takes the sophomore's record to 11-1 and 3-0 in the Big Ten on the year. Acosta, in the No. 5 spot, defeated Wisconsin's Sprecher, 6-1, 6-3, as the junior improves his overall record 6-3.
After falling short in the first set 6-3, Kovacs battled back by beating Petr Satral in the second, 6-2, to force a decisive third set. The senior stepped up to clinch the win for the Boilermakers with a 6-2 outing. The senior pushes his mark to 10-3 when playing at No. 3.
Ricky Medinilla came out with a 6-3 first set win over the Badger's Alexander Kokorev, but fell in the second, 6-2. The freshman fought hard after the loss to gain the win in the third, 6-3. The Mexico City, Mexico, native, evens his record to 6-6.
Dujovne added to Purdue's lead at 6-0 in the No. 4 spot, defeating Jalalov in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, and to remain undefeated at 4-0 in the Big Ten and 9-1 overall. Szymon Tatarczyk, in the No. 1 spot, battled out the third set finalizing the shutout for the Boilermakers with his 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Oskar Wikberg.
Purdue continues to work through its Big Ten slate, traveling west to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on April 4. The Boilermakers will continue west on I-80 to Lincoln, Neb., for an April 6 contest against the Cornhuskers.
