SAN DIEGO - The 40th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team notched its second shutout of the season, defeating No. 73 Denver, 4-0, in the second day of competition at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic Friday. It was the third win over a nationally ranked opponent this season as the Boilermakers improved to 8-3, 1-1 Big Ten. They will take on No. 56 Princeton for fifth place playing on the courts of the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
The tournament hosted by San Diego and San Diego State features six nationally ranked teams in addition to the Boilermakers: No. 28 Harvard, No. 32 Memphis, No. 43 Drake and No. 56 Princeton, No. 61 San Diego, No. 73 Denver Play for tournament format is set that doubles action will cease once the point has been decided and the match will stop once a team has reached four points.
Wins by the doubles teams of Szymon Tatarczyk and Ricky Medinilla, along with Mateus Silva and Mark Kovacs, combined to earn Purdue the doubles point. The senior/freshman Boilermaker tandem of Tatarczyk and Medinilla defeated Diogo Rocha and Fabio Biasion, 8-4. They improved to 3-0 with the win at the No. 2 spot. Silva and Kovacs mirrored the score while playing at No. 3, beating Aidan Talcott and Alex Clinkenbeard, to move their record to 3-2.
Holding a 1-0 advantage in the team score, Purdue needed three wins to secure the match and did so in dominating fashion. The Boilermakers won the three necessary matches in straight sets, winning 36 combined games and giving up just 17.
At No. 4, Dujovne pushed his mark to 8-1 as he defeated Clinkenbeard, 6-2, 6-3. Kovacs used a 6-2, 6-3, decision to get past Gasson for the eighth win of his senior season while playing at the No. 3 spot. The third win came via Acosta, who registered a 6-4, 6-4, win over Yannik James. The junior who hails from Cuenca, Ecuador, ran his record to 8-3 with the win as the No. 5 singles player.
