MINNEAPOLIS -- Michelle Cabassol's Honorable Mention All-America distinction earned via a second-place finish in the consolation final of 1-meter diving highlighted the opening day of action at the NCAA Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.

Cabassol finished only four tenths of a point behind the round winner, Tennessee's Victoria Lamp, with a score of 303.45 in the 1-meter diving consolation final. Cabassol earned seven team points for the Boilermakers Thursday with her 10th-place overall showing. She was 11th of 39 competitors in the preliminaries. The top eight advanced to the championship final while the ninth through 16th-place finishers in the prelims moved on to the consolation final. She earned a list score of 287.55 in the prelims, 3.8 points behind the eighth-place finisher.

Cabassol was also an All-American in 3-meter diving at the 2013 NCAA Championships after placing fourth in the championship final.

Carly Mercer, Casey Matthews and MacKenzie Tweardy competed for the Boilers at the national championship meet as well Thursday. Mercer placed 49th in the prelims of the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.94. Matthews finished 30th (250.45 points) and Tweardy 38th (227.25) in the 1-meter diving prelims. The top events for Mercer, Matthews and Tweardy -- the 100 free, 3-meter diving and platform diving, respectively -- are still to come this week.

Friday's schedule for Purdue will feature Rhiannon Sheets in the 200 free, Francesca Marr in the 100 breaststroke, and Cabassol and Matthews in 3-meter diving. The Boilermakers will also be represented by a quartet of swimmers in the 800 free relay. Matthews is the defending 3-meter national champion.

Preliminaries begin at noon ET and finals begin at 8 p.m. ET.
