DADE CITY, Fla. -- After playing the first nine holes in 2-over par, the Purdue men's golf team regouped on the back nine to rally for a 5-under par 283 and sit in eighth place after day one of the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Country Club.
The Boilermakers sit just eight shots behind UNC Greensboro and 20th-ranked Florida State, which both tallied 13-under par scores of 275.
No. 37-ranked Memphis is in third (-11) and is followed by 35th-ranked Mercer and 7th-ranked Illinois at 8-under par and in a tie for fourth. No. 33-ranked USF is sixth (-7) and 23rd-ranked Auburn is seventh at 6-under par.
Senior Adam Schenk continues his remarkable tear, shooting a 7-under par 65, the fourth-best 18-hole score in school history, which also tied his career-low round. Schenk is in a tie for fourth, two shots behind UNC Greensboro's Ray Dixon's score of 9-under par 63.
After going out in 33, Schenk birdied four of the final six holes and registered seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys. Over his last 72 holes, Schenk is now 18-under par and has recorded 21 birdies.
Freshman Austin Eoff had a solid round with a 3-under par 69 and sits in a 13th-place tie after 18 holes. After bogeying the fourth hole to fall back to even-par, Eoff played the last 14 holes in 3-under par to record the second-best round of his career.
Enzo Perez recorded a 2-over par round of 74 and freshman Fernando Barco finished with a 3-over par 75 to round out Purdue's scoring. Perez was 4-over par through 10 holes, but got to 1-over par through 17 holes before bogeying the 18th hole for his 74.
Barco, meanwhile, was 4-over par after a triple bogey on the eighth hole, but he responded with birdies on two of the next three holes to rally for a 75.
Philippe Schweizer carded a 5-over par 77 which did not count towards Purdue's scoring.
