BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Andjela Djokovic provided wins for the 31st-ranked Purdue women's tennis team in a 5-2 loss to in-state rival and 44th-ranked Indiana Friday at the IU Tennis Center. The loss evened the Boilermakers' overall record at 5-5, but they slipped to 1-2 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers pick up their first conference win and move to 12-4, 1-1 Big Ten.
A back-and-forth battle in doubles set the stage for a dramatic finish. Indiana struck first, taking the No. 3 match over Nicole Robinson and Bernard-Feigenbaum by a score of 8-4. Daniela Vidal and Natalia Davila evened the best of three doubles with an 8-4 win of their own over Sophie Garre and Kayla Fujimoto at No. 2. The duo improved to 4-1 with the win over Garre and Fujimoto.
Taking the doubles point down to the wire, the tightly contested battle at No. 1 saw Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek escape with an upset of the 43rd-ranked Purdue tandem of Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany in the breaker, 8-7 (8-6).
Trailing 2-0 with one singles match complete, Bernard-Feigenbaum scored the first point for the Boilermakers with her straight-set victory over Carolyn Chupa playing as the No. 3 singles for the first time this season. Bernard-Feigenbaum pushes her sophomore campaign record to 8-3 with action at Nos. 3-5.
The Hoosiers then pushed their lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 2. Purdue answered back as Djokovic rallied from a 6-1 first-set loss to Gabrielle Rubenstein to post back-to-back set scores of 6-4 to down her Hoosier opponent. The freshman moved to 7-2 in her rookie season with the win.
Singles play at Nos. 5 and 1 were pushed to a third set, to which Murdy sealed the Indiana victory by defeating Kapitany, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot. With the dual match decided, the fight between Vidal and Klyczek ceased with the Boilermaker opting to retire down 2-1 in the third set.
The Purdue women's tennis team will head out west for a pair of spring break matches, first playing at No. 28 Arizona State on March 18 at 4:30 ET, followed by a March 19 match at No. 33 Arizona at 4 p.m. ET.
