WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman Nicole Robinson clinched the 30th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team's 5-2 win over Georgia State Friday at the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. The dual match victory improves the Boilermakers' record to 3-1, 0-0 Big Ten. With her 6-4, 6-2, win at No. 3 singles, Robinson improves her singles record to 5-2.
Purdue took an early 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches from the Panthers. In the No. 1 spot, Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany upended the No. 23 tandem of Abigail Tere-Apisha and Masa Grgan, 6-4, to secure doubles point for the Boilermakers. Claudia Ecsribens and Nicole Robinson teamed together to defeat Lin Timmerman and Chaimaa Roudami, 6-2, while playing in the No. 3 spot. Daniela Vidal and Natalia Davila posted a 6-2 decision against Marcia Tere-Apisah and Tarai Kameo at No. 2 to round out doubles play.
Moving into singles, Purdue captured victory in four of six matches. Vidal pushed her spotless record to 8-0 with a win over Masa Grgan 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 position. At No. 5, Kapitany dominated Maryna Kozachenko in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, improving her sophomore season singles record to 6-1. Rookie Andjela Djokovic also remained undefeated at 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Panther Chaimaa Roudami.
Schmidt, ranked 110th, fought hard against eighth-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, but fell short in the tiebreaker match, 7-5, 4-6, 14-12. It was a point-for-point battle until the very end. With this loss Schmidt brings her record to 5-7 in her final campaign as a Boilermaker.
The Boilermakers will be back in action on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center against No. 28 Tulsa Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. Georgia State and Tulsa will face off Saturday at 12 p.m.
