RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Senior Adam Schenk continues to lead a strong Purdue effort at the Puerto Rico Classic as the Boilermakers sit in fifth place after two rounds at the elite event at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.
Schenk currently sits in second place after following his opening-round 66 with a 4-under par 68 in the second round for a two-day total of 134 (-10). Schenk trails Alabama's Robby Shelton by three strokes, who leads the tournament with rounds of 67-64=131 (-13). Schenk leads Georgia's Joey Garber by one shot, who is third at 9-under par (67-68=135).
Schenk continued his excellent play with four more birdies to go along with the six he made in Sunday's round. Schenk has recorded no bogeys in 36 holes and leads the tournament in par-3 scoring average at -3 (2.63 per hole).
As a team, the Boilermakers fell back a bit in the second round, but managed to pull it together late in the day and finish round two in fifth at 281-290=571 (-5). No. 1-ranked Alabama (545; -31) leads No. 3-ranked Georgia Tech (555; -21) by 10 shots. No. 7-ranked Georgia follows in third, four shots behind the Rambling Wreck (559; -17) while No. 42 Clemson moved to fourth today with rounds of 287-276=563 (-13). The 38th-ranked Boilermakers are fifth at 571, while No. 9 Virginia Tech is sixth at 573.
Junior Enzo Perez pieced together a nice round for the Boilermakers, firing an even-par 72 for a two-day total of 74-72=146 (+2) to sit in a tie for 35th with freshman teammate Austin Eoff (73-73=146).
Freshman Philippe Schweizer shot a 77 today for a two-day total of 148 to place in a tie for 46th, while Fernando Barco's 80 did not count towards the team score.
Action will conclude tomorrow with the 18-hole final round.
