MINNEAPOLIS -- A new school record in the 100 butterfly, a new freshman benchmark in the 100 backstroke and another impressive showing by the divers in a springboard event highlighted day two for Purdue women's swimming and diving at the Big Ten Championships Friday.
Alex Todd and Kylie Vogel each broke the program record in the 100 fly. Todd finished the night as the new record holder (53.39) after eclipsing Vogel's prelim time in the evening finals. Hannah Manger posted the second-fastest time (54.73) in program history in the prelims of the 100 back, a time that doubled as a Purdue freshman record. She also swam the opening backstroke leg on the 400 medley relay.
It was the Purdue divers that were the top scorers on the team for the second night in a row. Casey Matthews (second), Mary Beth Dunnichay (third) and Michelle Cabassol (sixth) all qualified for the championship final of 3-meter diving. Add in MacKenzie Tweardy's points from advancing to the consolation final, and the divers racked up 48 points Friday.
The Boilermakers remained in sixth place in the team scoring with 253 points. Entering the final day of the Big Ten Championships, Purdue is within striking distance of fourth-place Michigan (272 points) and fifth-place Ohio State (261) while holding a 23-point lead on seventh-place Wisconsin. Minnesota (526) has essentially locked up its third straight Big Ten title, sporting a 129-point lead on second-place Indiana going into Saturday. Michigan would need a significant rally to catch third-place Penn State (314).
Matthews finished second to Minnesota's Maggie Keefer after the Purdue senior rallied past Keefer to win the 1-meter Big Ten Title Thursday. Dunnichay finished third in the championship final for the second day in a row. Dunnichay matched Keefer for the highest score (74.20) on a single dive in the finals.
All four Purdue divers have scored in each of the first two diving events of the Championships. Tweardy is the only Boiler expected to compete from the platform towers Saturday.
Purdue also had four competitors score in the 200 freestyle Friday. Led by Rhiannon Sheets qualifying for the A final, the Boilers tallied 19 points in the event. Allie Davis, Carly Mercer and Lizzy Lyon all scored by qualifying for the B final of the 200 free.
Todd and Vogel each eclipsed Sheets' 100 fly record from November 2011. Vogel finished the prelims in 53.49 but Todd was even faster in the finals, touching in 53.39. Purdue has now set three new program records at the Big Ten Championships this week.
Nika Karlina Petric (8th in A final of 400 IM) and Francesca Marr (5th in B final of 100 breast) also scored for the Boilermakers and moved up the all-time Top 10 lists in their events. Meagan Lim (100 fly), Madison Montiero (400 IM), Trish Regan (100 back), Davis, Dunnichay, Lyon and Vogel also moved up on the program's all-time lists Friday. The 400 medley relay team of Manger, Marr, Vogel and Grace Hernandez posted the third-fastest time (3:39.62) in program history.
Marr was announced as Purdue's Big Ten sportsmanship honoree for the 2013-14 season on Friday.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries at noon ET and finals at 7:30 p.m. ET.
