WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 75 Purdue men's tennis team improved to 4-1, 0-0 Big Ten by defeating IUPUI (2-8, 0-0 The Summit League) and Valparaiso (5-2, 0-0 Horizon League) Saturday on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers captured the doubles point in both matches, surrendered just one singles match in a 6-1 win over the Jaguars and won four of six singles matches as they downed the Crusaders, 5-2. Purdue now leads the all-time series with IUPUI 3-0 and 4-0 against Valparaiso.
Aaron Dujovne and Mateus Silva posted a pair of wins in doubles action while playing together for the first time this season. They were tabbed at the No. 2 spot against IUPUI, defeating Jacob Bradley and Thomas Gans, 8-4. The tandem was the No. 1 doubles team for Purdue against Valparaiso, where they made easy work of Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakes, 8-1.
Mateus Silva teamed up with freshman Lucas Dages for an 8-4 win over the Jaguar duo of Akshay Verma and Manuel Laboy at No. 3. Also playing in the No. 3 spot against the Crusaders, Silva and Mark Kovacs defeated Eric Honert and Lucas Waak, 8-4.
In singles action, Kovacs, Acosta and Silva were two-time winners for Purdue. Kovacs, who hails from Budapest, Hungary, only allowed his opponents to score five combined points while posting straight-set victories. He first defeated IUPUI's Jacob Bradley, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot and followed up with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Michael Savaglio of Valparaiso at No. 3 to clinch the dual for the Boilermakers. The senior improves his singles mark to 4-1.
Playing in the No. 4 spot in both matches, Acosta scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory to get past Akshay Verma of IUPUI, and then posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Valparaiso's Eric Honert. The Cuenca, Ecuador, native pushes his record to 4-1 with the two victories. Silva saw action as the No. 5 singles player, delivering IUPUI's Patrick O'Neill a 6-2, 6-3, setback. He shut out Michael Baiocchi of Valparaiso in the first set and won the second, 6-2, for the fourth win of his sophomore season.
Ricky Medinilla and Aaron Dujovne were also victorious in the win over the Jaguars. Medinilla made his debut in the No. 1 spot and posted an easy 6-0, 6-3 win against Alex Toliver. In the No. 3 position, Dujovne blanked his opponent Thomas Gans, 6-0, 6-0. Playing at No. 2 in the Valprasio match, Szymon Tatarczyk improved to 3-1 by coming back for the win in the breaker, 6-7, 6-1, 10-8.
Purdue will be back in action hosting Bradley at the Schwartz Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m. ET on March 1.
