WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 27 Purdue women's tennis team fought its way to victory in competition on the second day of the Purdue Invite Saturday on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers took on No. 70 Louisville in doubles as well as Kansas and Miami (Ohio) in singles action, sweeping the Cardinals and RedHawks, and winning four of six matches against the Jayhawks.
Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany pushed their record to 3-0 at No. 1 doubles by defeating the Cardinals' duo of Manulea Velaquez and Rebecca Shine, 6-4. Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal teamed together to down Julia Fellerhoffer and Elle Stokes, also by way of a 6-4 score. In the No. 3 spot, Nicole Robinson and Tess Bernard-Feignenbaum gained control over Cassie Pough and Oliva Boesing to win 6-4.
Both Vidal and Krisztina Kapitany went undefeated in their singles matches. Against Kansas, Vidal took a 6-2, 6-3 match over Paulia Los, in the No. 3 spot. At No. 6, Kapitany defeated her Jayhawk opponent Caroline Henderson, 6-2 , 6-2.
Vidal battled in her victory against Miami by taking over in the second set to win 6-3, 7-6 (3) over Andreea Badileanu while playing at the No. 2 spot. No. 4 Kapitany also dominated in her match verses the RedHawks controlling the sets 6-2, 6-1 over Nimisha Mohan.
Schmidt, who is ranked 110th, was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set against Miami, but defeated Christina Raymond 7-6 (8-6). She closed the door on Raymond in the second set with a 6-4 victory to clinch the shutout for the Boilermakers.
The tournament is a hidden dual-match format, meaning each team will play each other once in singles and doubles, though a particular team will not play singles and doubles against the same team on the same day.
On Sunday, the final day of the Purdue Invite, the Boilermakers will match up against Louisville at 12 p.m. ET after Kansas takes on Miami at 9 a.m., all in singles competition.
