CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Purdue women's tennis team split singles with Illinois in the final day of the Midwest Blast Sunday. Wins were registered by Boilermakers playing in the Nos. 1, 5 and 6 positions. The end of the hidden-match tournament also marks the conclusion of the women's tennis team's fall season.
After being dealt a 6-1 setback in the opening set, junior Lynda Xepoleas responded with a 6-4 win in the second and took the decisive set 6-1 to defeat Illini Melissa Kopinsk in the No. 1 spot.
Sophomores Krisztina Kapitany and Claudia Escribens tallied straight-set victories at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Kapitany posted scores of 6-3, 6-4, to defeat Louise Kwong and Escribens made easy work of Julia Jamieson, 6-0, 6-4.
Illinois' wins in the middle of the lineup were all scratched out in three sets, one of which was decided with a tiebreaker in the third set.
Head coach Laura Glitz will prepare her team for the start of the spring season, which gets underway Jan. 17-19, 2014, by hosting the Purdue Invite.
