Sunday Finals Results | Dive-by-Dive Scoring | Complete 3-Day Meet Results
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Carly Mercer's new program record in the 100 freestyle and Nate Cox's victory in the Boilers' first platform diving competition of the season highlighted the third and final day of the Ohio State Invitational for the Purdue swimming and diving teams.
The No. 16 Purdue women finished in fourth place with 571.5 points. The Boilermakers had moved into third place Saturday, but the host Buckeyes were able to overcome Purdue's 15-point advantage. The three-day Ohio State Invitational featured four Top 20 teams competing in a 10-lane pool. No. 5 Florida rallied Sunday to win the women's scoring by four points over No. 12 Virginia. The Gators overcame a 49-point deficit on the final day of the meet.
Mercer finished as the runner-up in the A final of 100 free with a Purdue-record time of 48.43. She eclipsed Ariel Martin's record (48.68) from the 2011 Big Ten Championships. It was Mercer's first program record and the first new benchmark set since Lauren Gustafson broke the 50 free record at the 2013 Big Ten Championships.
Cox joined Casey Matthews as Purdue divers to win events this weekend in Columbus. With Matthews sweeping the women's springboard competitions, a Boiler was victorious in each of the three diving events at the three-day meet. Layne Rogers took second and Sean Mokhtari fourth to give the Purdue men three of the top four finishers from the platforms Sunday. MacKenzie Tweardy was the runner-up in the women's platform competition as the lone Boiler entered in the event. Sunday marked the first time this season that the Purdue divers competed from the platforms.
Francesca Marr finished third in the A final of the 200 breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:12.97, improving on her second-fastest time in program history. Rhiannon Sheets also finished third in the A final of the 200 butterfly (1:56.98), coming up only three tenths of a second shy of her program-record time from the 2011 Ohio State Invitational.
Nika Karlina Petric posted the third fastest time (16:23.49) in team history while placing 10th in the mile. Sunday marked the first time this season the Purdue women competed in the event.
Meagan Lim (200 fly), Hannah Manger (200 back) and the 400 free relay team of Mercer, Grace Hernandez, Kylie Vogel and Sheets also posted times that rank among the Top 10 all-time in Purdue history.
Megan Gallagher (200 breast), Hernandez (100 free) and Lim (200 fly) joined Marr, Mercer, Petric and Sheets as individual point scorers for the Boilermakers Sunday. Stephanie Schlobohm also won the C final of the 200 fly.
Selected members of the Purdue women's team will be in action the weekend of Dec. 6-8 at the Hoosierland Winter Invite in Bloomington, Ind. The Purdue divers will compete at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas, from Dec. 17-22. The next meet for the full team is tentatively set for Jan. 4 at Hawaii.
