WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Four Boilermaker hitters reached double digits and all 12 players who took the court contributed in the No. 25 volleyball team's 3-1 win over Iowa Saturday night. Purdue won the match 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21.
Junior Val Nichol narrowly missed a triple double, posting a match-high 15 kills, 23 assists and nine digs, while also chipping in four aces and four blocks. Sophomore Annie Drews (12), junior KiKi Jones (11) and redshirt senior Katie Griffin (10) also reached double-digits in kills. Redshirt freshman Faye Adelaja and redshirt senior Catherine Rebarchak added nine and seven putaways respectively.
Defensively, redshirt senior Carly Cramer managed a match-high 16 digs followed by sophomore Amanda Neill 910), Nichol (9) and senior Hilliary Fox (9). Jones led Purdue at the net with six blocks, followed by Nichol's four.
Purdue outhit Iowa .317 to .197 and served up seven aces to the Hawkeyes' four.
The Boilermakers took a 5-3 lead in the set, but Iowa scored three straight to go up 6-5. Purdue responded with a 3-0 run of its own, including an ace and a kill by Jones. A Hawkeye kill slowed the Boilers momentarily, but Purdue boosted its lead to 16-7 with an 8-0 run including three service aces by Nichol. Kills by Adelaja and Rebarchak made it a 10-point game at 18-8. Iowa scored four of the next six to cut the margin to eight at 20-12, but Purdue scored three straight including an ace by redshirt senior Rachel Davis to make it 23-12. A kill by Jones and a Hawkeye miscue capped the set at 25-14 for Purdue. Jones went 3-for-3 in the stanza as the Boilers outhit Iowa .318 to .000.
The teams were even through the first 12 points of Set 2, but Purdue pulled away to take a 25-18 win. The Boilermakers broke the tie at 6-6 with a 5-0 run, including three straight kills by Drews. Iowa cut the lead to just one with a 4-0 run of its own. Purdue upped the margin to four at 16-12 on a kill by Griffin, but the Hawkeyes were within one again at 16-15. The Boilermakers called timeout and scored four of the next five out of the break, including a stuff by Jones and Nichol. The Hawkeyes called timeout and got a kill after the break, but Purdue added three more points, including kills by Adelaja and Drews to go up 23-17. An Adelaja kill and a Nichol ace, her fourth of the night, clinched the 25-18 win.
A mid-set rally gave the Hawkeyes the edge in a 25-21 Set 3 win. Iowa hit .342 to Purdue's .333 effort in the stanza. The teams traded points leading to a 7-7 tie. Kills by Griffin, Jones and Nichol helped the Boilers to an 11-8 edge. A Drews kill made it 14-10 and brought on an Iowa timeout. The Hawkeyes scored eight of the next nine points out of the break, including five kills, to turn the four-point deficit into a 18-15 lead. Purdue countered with a 4-1 run of its own, knotting the score at 19. Iowa scored three straight to go up 22-19. The Boilermakers called timeout and cut the margin to one at 22-21 with an Adelaja kill and a stuff by Jones and Rebarchak, but two kills and a Purdue miscue gave the Hawkeyes the 25-21 win.
Seven players got in the offensive action for Purdue in the 25-21 Set 4 win, led by Nichol's five putaways. The Boilermakers outhit the Hawkeyes .333 to .172 in the stanza. Purdue scored the first three points of the set, including an ace by Cramer and went on to take a 7-4 lead on a kill by Davis. Purdue upped its lead to five at 15-10 after kills by Griffin, Jones and Drews. Iowa took a timeout and cut the advantage to just one at 19-18. Putaways by Griffin and Nichol and a stuff by Nichol and Jones put Purdue up four at 22-18. Iowa took its final timeout and scored two of the next three, but a kill by Jones gave the Boilers their first shot at the match at 24-20. A Rachael Bedell kill kept the set going, but Drews ended it the following play.
The No. 25 Boilermakers (18-11, 9-9 Big Ten) wrap up Big Ten play with a Wednesday night contest at Indiana and a Saturday home match vs. Michigan State.
