WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Terone Johnson scored 17 points to help Purdue defeat Central Connecticut State 109-73 on Wednesday night.
It was the highest point total by a Purdue team since scoring 118 against Florida A&M on Dec. 22, 1997.
Purdue center A.J. Hammons had 12 points, seven blocks and five rebounds in just 17 minutes.
Rapheal Davis scored 14 points and Errick Peck and Ronnie Johnson each added 11 for the Boilermakers (2-0), who previously defeated Northern Kentucky on Nov. 8. The Boilermakers shot 54 percent from the field and committed just nine turnovers.
Kyle Vinales scored 22 points for Central Connecticut State, but he made just 6 of 21 field goals. Faronte Drakeford added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils (0-2).
Central Connecticut started off on an 8-2 run. After Purdue evened things up at 10, the Blue Devils pushed their lead out to 17-12.
The Boilermakers responded with an 18-0 run that spanned more than five minutes to take control of the game.
Purdue shot 54 percent in the first half, taking a 54-32 lead at the break. Johnson scored 10 points in the first half while Peck added seven. Hammons had six points and five blocks in 10 minutes of action in the first half. Eleven Purdue players scored in the first 20 minutes.
Central Connecticut scored 17 points in the first six minutes and just 15 the rest of the half. Hammons' presence forced the Blue Devils away from the basket and the shots that weren't blocked were mostly contested jumpers.
The Boilermakers extended their lead in the early minutes of the second half, and the advantage reached 30 on a pair of free throws by Davis.
The Boilermakers scored their 100th point on a basket by Stephen Toyra. This was the fourth time since the start of the 1999-2000 season that the Boilermakers scored at least 100 points in a game.
