TOLEDO, Ohio - Diego Acosta won all three of his matches to lead the way for a trio of Purdue men's tennis players in action at the Rocket Invitational hosted by Toledo Friday and Saturday. Acosta was joined by freshmen Matt Bouggy and Lucas Dages at the two-day, six-team tournament that featured Ohio Dominican, Case Western, Ferris State and Wayne State in addition to the host, Toledo. For the third time in as many events this fall, weather was a factor and forced nearly all of the matches to be played inside at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Boilermakers squared off against Wayne State and Ohio Dominican in singles action on Friday. Acosta picked up the lone win against Wayne State, a 3-6, 6-5 (3), 10-5, decision over Stephane Robineau. The Purdue trio followed up with a sweep of Ohio Dominican, all in straight sets. Dages gave up just three points to Gerardo Perez in his win (6-1, 6-2) and freshman counterpart picked up the first win of his Boilermaker career as Bouggy defeated Branden Girard, 6-4, 6-0.
Acosta teamed up with Dages in a 6-1, 6-3 doubles victory over Case Western's Louis Stuerke and Kevin Dong to open Saturday's play. Acosta's final win of the event came against Ferris State's Sergiu Luza, 6-5 (3), 6-5 (3).
For his performance, Acosta was named to the First-Team All-Tournament team, while Dages was named to the second team.
The Purdue men's tennis team will return to action Oct. 11 - 15 at the 2013 USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
