WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis player Mark Kovacs took down top-seeded Vlad Stefan of Michigan in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Singles Championships Saturday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Kovacs will face Alex Buzzi of Michigan Sunday at 10:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to the 1:45 p.m. semifinals. A trio of Boilermakers will play in the Singles Consolation Round of 16: Aaron Dujovne, Mateus Silva and Diego Acosta.
Kovacs, who is seeded ninth, had to rally from a first set loss that was decided in the tiebreaker (6-7 (5)) to Doug Zade of Michigan State, and did so in controlling fashion, winning 6-1, 6-4. The senior carried his momentum into the Round of 16 against Stefan, winning the first set 6-2. Stefan pushed back in the second set, but Kovacs slammed the door with a 7-5 decision.
Dujovne won both of his Singles Consolation Draw matches for a spot in the Round of 16. Starting in the consolation Round of 128, the senior Boilermaker posted a straight-set victory over Northwestern's Alp Horoz (6-3, 6-3) and then defeated Tom Blackwell of Nebraska in the tiebreaker, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. He received a default from Vasileios Stravropoulos in the Round of 32 and will meet Iowa's Dominic Patrick at 9 a.m.
Silva earned a spot in the Round of 16 courtesy of two straight-set wins in Singles Consolation Draw action. Silva dominated Andrew Dzulynsky of Nebraska (6-1, 6-1) and Wisconsin's Elliott Sprecher (6-4, 6-4) to earn a match against Nika Dolidze of Penn State at 9 a.m.
Acosta became the second Boilermaker to defeat Zade of Michigan State, eliminating him from the tournament, 6-4, 7-5, in the final match of the night. Earlier in the day he surrendered just two points to Paul Heeder of Michigan State as he posted a 6-1, 6-1, straight-set win. The junior returns to the court at 10:15 a.m. to take on Iowa's Andres Estenssoro.
Third-seeded Szymon Tatarczyk cruised past Elliott Sprecher of Wisconsin in the Singles Main Draw Round of 32, but came up short against Michigan State's John Patrick Mullane (6-2, 6-2) in the Round of 16 to bow out of the tournament. In the Consolation Singles Draw, Lucas Dages dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision to Indiana's Kellen Bates in the Round of 128 and Matt Bouggysuffered a 6-0, 6-2 setback to Paul Heeder of Michigan State in the Round of 64.
