WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams were victorious in 22 of the 24 events on the day as the Boilermakers opened their home schedules with a pair of team wins at the eight-school, 14-team Indiana Intercollegiates meet Saturday afternoon at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The Purdue men won all 12 events and accumulated 738.5 points to win by 420 points over the second-place finisher among a field of seven men's teams in attendance. The Purdue women won 10 events and racked up 715.5 points to emerge victorious by 356.5 points among a seven-team field.
Seniors Carly Mercer and Danny Tucker along with divers Michelle Cabassol and Layne Rogers led the way by each winning a pair of individual events. Mercer demonstrated her versatility by touching first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Tucker swept the freestyle sprints, winning the 50 free with an impressive early-season time of 19.87. He also anchored the 200 free relay team with a split of 19.09, but was responsible for the DQ that wiped out the foursome's victory.
Cabassol and Rogers both swept their gender's 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
Lyam Dias followed Tucker's lead and also posted an impressive early-season time while winning the 100 breast in 55.45.
Freshmen Josh Brooks and Alex Toetz performed well for the Purdue men. Brooks won the 200 IM and also touched first in his heat of the 100 butterfly. Toetz was victorious in the 100 backstroke, won his heat while finishing second overall in the 200 IM and also contributed to a 200 medley relay victory.
For the women, Rhiannon Sheets won the 500 free and contributed to both relay victories. Grace Hernandez was victorious in the 50 free and swam the leadoff leg on Purdue's top 200 free relay team.
Other individual winners for the Boilermakers included: Guillermo Blanco (100 fly), Danny Conway (500 free), Allie Davis (500 free), Meagan Lim (100 fly) and Luke Trimmer (200 free).
