WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team advanced a pair of players to the Singles Main Draw Round of 32 Friday at the Big Ten Singles Championships. One round of the Singles Main Draw and three rounds of the Doubles Main and Consolation Draws were contested at the Schwartz Tennis Center and Lafayette Sports Center. Semifinals in both doubles draws are set to get underway at the Schwartz Tennis Center Saturday at 8 a.m. ET.
Senior counterparts Mark Kovacs and Szymon Tatarczyk each posted straight-set victories to move into the Round of 32. Kovacs, seeded ninth, defeated Matt Barry of Penn State, 7-5, 6-3, and will take on Michigan State's Doug Zade Saturday at 12 p.m. No. 3 Tatarczyk made easy work of Iowa Chase Tomlins, 6-1, 6-3. His 11 a.m. opponent will be Elliott Sprecher of Wisconsin.
Five other Purdue men's tennis players fell into the Singles Consolation Draw after dropping their Round of 64 matches. Aaron Dujovne and Lucas Dages will be the first Boilermakers to begin their battle back through the draw, facing Alp Horoz of Northwestern and Kellen Bates of Indiana, respectively, at 8 a.m. Also playing in the draw are Matt Bouggy, Mateus Silva and Diego Acosta.
In doubles competition, the team of Tatarczyk and Silva made quick work of Indiana's Kellen Bates and Dimitrije Tasic with an 8-1 victory in their first match. They were halted by Eric Frueh and Ruben Weber of Minnesota in the Round of 16, losing 8-2, and were bounced from the draw.
Acosta and Dujovne rallied from an opening round loss with an 8-4 win over Tom Blackwell and Dusty Boyer of Nebraska in the consolation draw. The Boilermaker duo lost the next match to exit the tournament, falling to Iowa's Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan, 8-5.
