MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Purdue women's tennis players Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany advanced to the Main Draw doubles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships with a pair of wins at The Racquet Club of Memphis Saturday. Schmidt was also victorious in the Main Draw singles Round of 64. The Main Draw doubles quarterfinals will be contested Sunday at 8 a.m. CT, followed by the Rounds of 32 and 16 in the Main Draw singles.
Saturday's action opened with two rounds of doubles competition, which Schmidt and Kapitany cruised through. The 12th-ranked and top-seeded pair opened with an 8-2 win over Nayara Moraes and Sarah Sediri of Middle Tennessee State, followed by an 8-1 dismantling of Vanderbilt's Marie Casares and Frances Altick.
Schmidt and Kapitany's quarterfinal opponents will be Stefanie Mikez and Anki Wind of Memphis. The Tiger tandem knocked out the eighth-seeded team in the Round of 32 and used an 8-7 decision over Andreea Bandileanu and Christiana Raymond of Miami (Ohio) to push into the quarterfinals.
One round of Main Draw singles action played out at the conclusion of doubles. Schmidt showed why she was awarded with the No. 4 seed and a national ranking of No. 125 with a dominating 6-1, 6-0, win over Butler's Caroline Hedrick. The senior Boilermaker will face off against Caitlin McGraw of Kentucky at 9:30 a.m. McGraw defeated Saioa Oscoz of Eastern Kentucky, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-5.
Kapitany suffered a 6-4, 6-1, setback to fifth-seeded Julia Fellerhoff of Louisville in the Round of 64.
