OXFORD, Ohio -- Carly Mercer and Allie Davis were each two-time individual winners and Purdue women's swimming and diving was victorious in 14 of the 16 events to win its season-opening dual meet at Miami (Ohio), 177-116, Friday evening.

Along with winning the 50 and 200 freestyle, Mercer also contributed to both relay wins for the Boilermakers. Davis swept distance freestyle events (500 and 1000 free).

Rhiannon Sheets won the 200 butterfly, took second in the 100 free and contributed to the 200 free relay victory. Francesca Marr duplicated the trifecta by winning the 200 breast, finishing second in the 200 IM and swimming the breaststroke leg on the victorious 200 medley relay team.

Four of Purdue's 12 individual victories came from newcomers in their team debuts.

"It was a good start to the 2013-2014 season," Purdue head coach John Klinge said. "Our swimmers and divers competed well and you could definitely see progress on a lot of the things we've been emphasizing in practice."

Three events featured exciting tight finishes. Grace Hernandez out touched Sheets by six hundredths of a second to win the 100 free. Freshmen Hannah Manger and Meagan Lim finished within seven hundredths of a second of each other in the 100 backstroke. And Stephanie Schlobohm out touched Francesca Marr by 11 hundredths of a second to win the 200 IM.

Trish Regan (200 back), Hernandez, Lim and Manger were the Purdue newcomers to win events Friday. Hernandez and Lim also contributed to a relay victory. Lim finished second in the 100 and 200 back to go along with her victory in the 100 fly.

Michelle Cabassol won the 1-meter diving event and was the lone Boiler to compete from the 3-meter board, placing second.

The men's divers also competed Friday, with Jamie Bissett (1-meter) and Layne Rogers (3-meter) claiming victories. Alec Back took second in both events. Bissett's 1-meter score (375.68) was a personal best and the fifth highest in program history. The men's diving scores will carry over to the Nov. 22 Purdue-Miami dual at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The men and women of Purdue swimming and diving will participate in Saturday's third annual Breaststroke 4 Hope swim-a-thon fundraiser at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Both teams return to action next Saturday (Oct. 26) for the Indiana Intercollegiates meet, which will be held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center and feature eight colleges from around the state.
