CARMEL, Ind. -- The No. 44-ranked Purdue men's golf rallied from a slow start in third round in recording its fourth-best round of the year to surge to a second-place finish at the prestigious Crooked Stick Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Boilermakers recorded a third-round score of three-over par 291 to surpass No. 6-ranked Georgia and finish behind No. 25-ranked Arkansas, who rallied from fourth to first with a final-round four-under par 284.
Purdue wrapped up the tournament at 16-over par 880 (295-294-291) to finish just five shots behind the 25th-ranked Razorbacks (306-285-284=875) and one shot ahead of No. 6-ranked Georgia (295-290-296=881). No. 31-ranked Florida State was fourth at 887 (292-296-299).
With the second-place finish, Purdue has not finished lower than fourth in any tournament this year and own a sterling 42-8-2 (.827) overall record. The only teams to defeat the Boilermakers this year are Arkansas (#25), California (#4), Kent State (#17), Loyola, Chicago (UR), Michigan (#60), Northwestern (#38), Oklahoma (#11) and Oklahoma State (#5).
The story of the third round was the play of Adam Schenk. Schenk fired a tournament-best four-under par 68 in the final round to help him finish in second place with a one-under par 215, just three shots behind Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelan. Schenk was at even-par for his round today through 10 holes when he had a five-hole stretch of eagle-par-birdie-par-birdie to catapult to second. It marks his highest finish of the season and it's his eighth career top-five finish in 39 career events.
Meanwhile, freshman Austin Eoff continued his outstanding play, finishing third with a three-round total of one-over par 217 after rounds of 71-74-72. Eoff has now finished tied for fourth, tied for 11th, seventh and third in his first four collegiate tournaments and seven of his 12 rounds have been at or under par. The No. 76-ranked golfer in America according to Golfstat.com, Eoff is a cumulative two-over par for his career.
Enzo Perez had his finest tournament of the season with a T-17th finish after rounds of 77-73-74 for an eight-over par 224. Perez has shown steady improvement this fall, placing 21st and 17th in his last two tournaments.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer also continued his improvement, placing 22nd with a nine-over par 225 (73-75-77). Schweizer has seen his placing drop in all four of his tournaments, going from 38th to 31st to 23rd to 22nd this week.
Sam Fu rounded out the Boilermakers' scoring with rounds of 80-74-78=232 to finish in a tie for 43rd at 16-over par. Fu was competing in his first tournament since April 2012.
The tournament field averaged 76.81 for the three rounds. Purdue and Georgia were the only squads with four players to finish in the top 22.
Purdue will close out its fall season on Oct. 25-26 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
