KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Ricky Medinilla became the first player of the Pawel Gajdzik era to advance to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships Monday, but fell short to top-ranked Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-3.
The freshman Boilermaker from Mexico City, Mexico, earned a spot in the semifinals with a thrilling 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, three-set victory over Kevin Lai of Kentucky earlier Monday.
Medinilla won five matches while playing in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. He won two matches in straight sets and battled to a third-set victory in the other three matches. The rookie also took down three upperclassmen in the tournament to improve to 12-3 in fall competition.
The Purdue men's tennis team will host the Big Ten Singles Championships Oct. 25-28 at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
