KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Ricky Medinilla punched a ticket to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships Sunday by defeating David O'Hare of Memphis in the Round of 16 in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. The win is the 11th of his fall campaign. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Monday starting at 10 a.m. ET.
Medinilla, a freshman from Mexico City, Mexico, is the first player of the Pawel Gajdzik era that has advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. His quarterfinal opponent is Kevin Lai, a sophomore from Kentucky. Lai posted a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, win over Tennessee's Sean Karl in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Szymon Tatarczyk also made an appearance in the Round of 16, but was unable to get past 24th-ranked and third-seeded Hunter Reese of Tennessee. The senior suffered a 6-2, 6-2, loss to bow out of the tournament.
