COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Facing one of its most-challenging fields of the young season, the Purdue men's golf team more than held its own, wrapping up the Nicklaus Invitational hosted by Ohio State University in a fourth-place tie in the 12-team field.
The Boilermakers finished the three-round tournament at 25-over par 877 (281-305-291) to finish tied with Kent State. No. 5-ranked California won the tournament by 19 shots with a 10-under par 842. No. 10-ranked Oklahoma was second at nine-over par 861. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State finished third at 11-over par 863.
In addition to California, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Kent State was ranked No. 22 while Mississippi State (sixth place) and North Carolina (12th place) are teams receiving votes in the latest Golf World / Nike Golf Coaches Poll released today.
Freshman Austin Eoff turned in his third top-12 performance in as many events with an even-par 213 (67-73-73). Eoff finished in seventh place behind three California players, two Oklahoma State players and a Kent State participant.
Through three events, Eoff is now a cumulative one-over par for the season.
Enzo Perez just missed a top-20 finish with an eight-over par 221 (70-77-74) to place in a 21st-place tie, his top performance of the season.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer rebounded today to finish in a tie for 23rd with a 10-over par 223 (72-79-71). His finish is a career best.
Adam Schenk finished tied for 27th at 11-over par 224 (72-79-73) while Justin Cho was tied for 53rd at 80-76-81=237 (24-over par).
Purdue will be off until Oct. 14-15 when it competes at the Crooked Stick Invitational in Carmel, Ind.
