COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Purdue men's golf team saw a tale of two rounds unfold during Sunday's action of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at the Ohio State's University Scarlet Golf Course. The Boilermakers enter Monday's third and final round in fourth place out of 12 teams with a two-round total of 18-over par 586.
No. 1-ranked California leads the tournament at seven-under par 561, while top 30 squads Oklahoma (5-over par) and Oklahoma State (9-over par) are in second and third place.
The Boilermakers had a sensational first round, tying the Golden Bears for the top spot after 18 holes with a three-under par 281. The round of 281 tied for the 18th-best round in school history and equaled the lowest score for the program since Sept. 27, 2010.
However, Purdue struggled mightily in round two in windy, overcast conditions, compiling a 21-over par 305 to offset the Boilermakers' strong first round.
However, Purdue still leads nationally-ranked squads Kent State by five shots and Mississippi State by six shots.
Freshman Austin Eoff continues to impress as he sits in a fourth-place tie at 2-under par 140. Eoff was tied for first after the initial 18 holes with a career-low four-under par round of 67. He followed that up with a 73 to find himself just two shots back of California's Brandon Hagy.
Enzo Perez is in a tie for 20th at five-over par 147 (70-77), while Adam Schenk and Philippe Schweizer are in a tie for 31st with identical rounds of 72-79=151 (9-over par). Justin Cho rounds out Purdue's scoring at 14-over par (80-76=156) to sit in a tie for 48th.
The third and final round will conclude Monday at the par-71 Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
